Hi everyone. I had an idea to create an air bnb type platform where people can list their private docks for short and long term rentals when not in use. Is that something you all think would be helpful and used by the boating community ?

Yes with some caveats. In marinas where the slip is rented there is often a clause in the rental contract prohibiting subleasing the dock. The marinas use the empty slips for transient boaters.

In some areas where docks are owned, "dockominiums" this might work.

I was more thinking outside of marinas. The idea would be that people could rent out their private docks attached to individual properties for less than a marina would cost. Although I'm not sure how much demand their would be of people willing to rent out their docks.

There are a number of brokers here who have such a list , however, I’m unfamiliar with the source directly. Next time I see him, I’ll ask and let you know what they do and how it is complied before you reinvent the wheel.

"Yea, I have a $5M house on the water and I'd like to pick up a few extra bucks by renting my dock to some strangers while I'm away skiing in the Alps." I can see that. :)

Land access could also be an issue, with boaters traipsing around the property looking for a water hose, or waiting for the Uber to take them grocery shopping. Is there separate meter for the dock if people plug in & run their a/c on high day and night? There may be extensive local knowledge needed to get in to some docks too. Not to say it is a bad idea - it could serve a purpose - but there are hurdles.

I think the idea has merit.
Many cruisers would like dockage that could be arranged at or near the time they want to use it. That would increase their flexibility and ultimately make a safer cruise particularly for sailors who like to travel in the PM.
I know some people who have docks but no boats. And at least some of them would enjoy some extra income. Also people with waterfront homes put moorings out even if they don't have a boat on it, to preserve the space. So that might be another area of interest.
I've had several docks owned by adjacent homeowners with agreeable results.
Insurance might be a snag.

Private, commercial mooring fields in public waters? Yeah, what could go wrong?

Not sure I understand, that's actually quite common here. You need to secure a mooring permit - which usually involves a long waiting period. But once you have it, you have to put in and maintain your own mooring, which is private, and you are at liberty to rent it out. That's how my marina works, and that's how the rest of the moorings in the harbor and the waters I'm familiar with work. For example, I know some people with beaucoup money who have waterfront houses with docks, and also moorings. They move the boats to the moorings during storms. They lend the moorings out to friends otherwise, and I believe they are at liberty to rent them out, but none of the people I know do so.

If you have to secure a permit to make it private, it is no longer public:tongue:
But there's no mooring until there's a permit. Even the publicly owned and maintained moorings are private, in the sense that you can't just tie up - you have to get permission, and pay a daily fee. Would you call public tennis courts that require a permit and a reservation "private?"

I would love to see it working in the Bay Area and the surrounding waterways to the mutual benefit of users and owners.

BnB (bed and breakfast) is an old concept, and whilst there are lots of details to sort out, has been made to work - all over the world and for me personally.

Go for it.

When I arrived up here I began the hunt for a reasonably priced almost anywhere south of the Mass/NH border. I began ti find slips, even some very reasonably priced "condo" docks. Before setting sail to the Caribbean in 2010, I spent a wintter in East Greenwich, RI at the rate of about $1200.00 a season. Even then, good slips for summer were out of hand. All the year round slips were now charging $6k for the winter or not open at all. I didn't even bother looking at summer rates. I can buy "condo" slip and pay it off in just a few years, at that rate.
Anyway, I'm on the Snag-ASlip - Find Marinas and Rent Boat Slips Online mailing list and the only slip they had availaqble was 30' for $2500.00 a month, water only! If you could find reasonably priced slips (if any exist up here) you'd do well, though probably not well enough to live on the proceeds.
