Hi everyone. I had an idea to create an air bnb type platform where people can list their private docks for short and long term rentals when not in use. Is that something you all think would be helpful and used by the boating community ?
"Yea, I have a $5M house on the water and I'd like to pick up a few extra bucks by renting my dock to some strangers while I'm away skiing in the Alps." I can see that.Although I'm not sure how much demand their would be of people willing to rent out their docks.
Private, commercial mooring fields in public waters? Yeah, what could go wrong? Also people with waterfront homes put moorings out even if they don't have a boat on it,
Not sure I understand, that's actually quite common here. You need to secure a mooring permit - which usually involves a long waiting period. But once you have it, you have to put in and maintain your own mooring, which is private, and you are at liberty to rent it out. That's how my marina works, and that's how the rest of the moorings in the harbor and the waters I'm familiar with work. For example, I know some people with beaucoup money who have waterfront houses with docks, and also moorings. They move the boats to the moorings during storms. They lend the moorings out to friends otherwise, and I believe they are at liberty to rent them out, but none of the people I know do so.Private, commercial mooring fields in public waters? If you have to secure a permit to make it private, it is no longer public.... You need to secure a mooring permit -
But there's no mooring until there's a permit. Even the publicly owned and maintained moorings are private, in the sense that you can't just tie up - you have to get permission, and pay a daily fee. Would you call public tennis courts that require a permit and a reservation "private?"If you have to secure a permit to make it private, it is no longer public![]()
