Do a haul out

and check the prop. Don't give up, be firm, buyers with cash, are rare, while boats for sale, are all over. You must tell us the RPMs at full power, so we have more info to make a better assessment. Blisters won't slow a boat under power and not under sail. Keep it up, Ctskip

what we're going to do.

This is what we are going to do...he agreed to the survey. But for now all we are going to have done is have that throttle cable fixed and checked out by a marine mechanic. Also am having some divers go down and look at it,clean it, zinc it and check the prop and take it from there. I believed that a $450 survey and $275 haul out and others expenses would not have solved my bottom problem and engine

Survey may required

I agree with all about the importance of a survey before you purchase a boat for your on peace of mind, you may be forced to have a survey by your insurance company before they will insure the boat... Many insurance companies will require a full survey on boats over 20 or 25 years old before they will even consider insuring the boat... In our a case the survey (46 page of facts and observations) turned up a cracked swaged fitting in the rigging and our insurance company made replacement of the fitting mandatory before the boat could be covered... Your survey will or should include 3 kinds of recommendations 1) “Essential” Repairs & Corrects (These will be a big deal with your insurance company & your safety) 2. “Required” Repairs & Corrections (these you should take seriously) and 3) “Desirable” Corrections & Repairs (these fall in the category of nice to have). Good luck and keep a positive attitude through the process Garner

Seadragon is right!

Seadance, you better check with you insurance company. I'm insured with Boat US here in NY. I have to have my 1977 C30 surveyed every 5 yrs as a insurance requirement. You may find that your going to have to short hual anyway to get insurance. How much for the divers? If it's not that expensive perhaps it is a good idea to send them down first. If the boat speed problem is just a dirty bottom & prop you could either have the diver do it or short haul. If your committed to buying this boat I would short haul & survey.

Well, you know from experience

that you should have a survey. But, in this case you have reason to suspect the prop and/or engine/drivetrain. So, if you can get those checked out first and for less money, do it. If the the results show serious issues, walk away. If not, go forward with the survey - a standard survey does not include an engine survey - you wind up paying extra if you want that anyway.

Dive Team and Engines

Hi Guys and Gals! What I did find out when I was calling around for surveyors and that the owner did not disclose was that the surveyor did an Insurance survey on this boat 3 years ago and he told me not much would have changed in that time. The surveyor did tell me he could not disclose any information but that "she was a good old boat" then.I called the broker and told him to tell the owner I wanted a copy of the survey faxed over to me. What are the chances I would have ever found that out? The dive team are coming down today that will run us about $60 and the boat dealer thru in the zinc for the boat. The mechanic is looking at the throttle cable tomorrow and is doing an over all inspection on the engine for me. If all goes well hubby will be bringing her home on Friday. Did I mention the dealership is throwing in their West Marine 50% discount for me to use at anytime? Has anyonne ever recieved such a benefit? I will say this much, we did not put this much effort and work into buying our home or any of our cars. I'm still standing by my statement...I think she is a good old boat just by her performance out on the sea trial and we roughed her up some and pushed her hard.If this boat has been neglected its because this guy just went thru a divorce..perhaps a piece of candy for us.

What the Divers found and your recommendations

Got a call from the divers.. The good: they said the bottom was dirty but the hull looks good and saw no evidence of any blistering, paint looks good too. Cleaned her up and they put the new zinc on. The bad: The prop looks pink and they believe it has Electrolysis , when they tapped it small pieces of the 2 blade prop fell off and they said the prop had some dings in it. They believe that is what might be slowing it down and causing any vibrating. Someone is going to have to educate me on this please because I think hair removal when I hear electrolysis. Next step...we are going to see if the owner is going to cover the $175 to remove it and put a new one on , and the cost of a new one and if he deos not then we cover it. So someone recommend me a good prop to buy and bless the boat dealers heart he is the one that is going to go and buy it for me since I am 2 hours away. They'll be putting it on tomorrow. So far in the whole $95.00 B/Seadance

RE:What the Divers found and your recommendations

Sould like you need a new prop. When you get the new prop on if the boat vibrates get the engine aligned and you'll have to pull the shaft out and get it checked. I guess a driver can change the prop but I am not sure. I would get the rig tuned before you get the engine aligned. Pulling the shaft is a short hull (the boat has to come out of the water). These are all sign of owner neglect. I wish you all the best one this one. I would walk away! I don't like owner neglect in an older boat. YOU DID CHECK FOR CORE ROT!!! IF NOT YOU COULD BE BUYING A HUGE PROBLEM!!!

3 years is a long time in a boats life if

water is leaking into the core. Wood rots quick. I am more afriad of a rotted core than blisters. Blister can be fixed without excessive labor! You can test for core rot without a surveyor if you know what your doing. You have to tap on the deck with a wooden hammer. You have to hit the deck hard and listen for a sharp ping. If you get a thud you need to check the area with a moisture meter, $300 piece of equipment.

Be careful, I have been with West Marine and I guarentee there is no such thing as a dealer 50% off program, what so ever! So don't buy into this one. Rob Hessenius

WM

Hi Guys, I called the dealer and he said he would have me added on to his account at the WM store that I wanted and use his discount. I called the store, and she said that that was not "technically legal" but that he would be adding me to their commercial business account where I would get 50% off "selected" equipment, 40% off maintenance supply and 10-20% on clothing. She said it would probably take about a month to get me in and a card. I will grill him more when I see him on Friday, if anything maybe I can try to get him to put it on paper? Right now the owner of the boat is paying for a new prop(we picked a 3 blade prop) and he is paying the $175 for the divers to take the old and put the new one on and the engine is being looked at today all on his dime. The only snaffew the dealer mentioned was that the owner was having a hard time locating a prop for us and I came back with.."We were surfing the web last night and found several props that could be overnighted." Like I said to my hubby if the owner did not jerk us around the first time we came and looked at the boat and was honest before about what we uncovered we could have had her home way earlier but he has delayed us by 3 weeks already. Because of his out of town job and how much of an inconvenience that was for him to just schedule a sea trial or even counter offers with us. I came back with its just as much as one for us to drive 2 hours at his request, my hubby has to take off work and then we have kids schedules I told them "all" that I expected this to be done and taken care of by Friday and that it was not my problem but theirs and the only phone call I wanted was that it was done and ready to go. Hubby wants to sail her home this weekend. :) okay truth: behind this smile there is a big headache brewing.

Don't get too excited....

...........about your "discount" account. West Marine's "wholesale" division is called "Port Supply". I've had a PS account for two years and have found that on most things that you will actually need the discount is nominal. Figure on average about 15%. Electronics are less than 5% off. I've actually had some items ring up more with PS than retail West Marine. Still, a nice benifit to have and as a matter of fact I would try to keep it under your hat or you may lose it as an option. It is always scary buying a big boat like this

but you have to take chances in life or else it is not worth living. What is the worst that can happen? You take a loss on the resale of the boat, so what! We want you to be happy with the boat. Enjoy your time out on the water and at the dock with your new boat. If it feel right, it is! You have to have faith in that your doing the right thing and then don't look back! If you love this boat and feel everything is going to last than buy her and don't look back! If you having second thoughs, write them down. List the pros and cons. Add a order of magnitude dollae amount to the cons. EHere is a example: Pro 1. Close to home 2. Price 3. Like the cabin layout Cons 1. Have have to replace shaft and cutless bearing ($500) guess (you can do the work yourself. 2. Repower ($10,000 to $20,000) depends on engine and labor rate. Include new control panel... 3. New Cushions $2000 - $3000... These are just ideas.

Smoke up your ham

Seadance- I WILL REPEAT THIS AGAIN. THERE IS NO PROGRAM/PORT SUPPLY THAT HAS THOSE KIND OF DISCOUNT NUMBERS. ALL HE IS GIVING YOU IS NOTHING FROM HIMSELF. ITS UP TO YOU TO FIND OUT IF THERE IS A POT OF GOLD AT THE END OF THE RAINBOW. LIKE I HAVE SAID I HAVE WORKED FOR WM FOR MANY YEARS. IF YOU DONT HAVE THE CARD, NO DISCOUNT!!! YOURE GETTING SOME SUNSHINE BLOWN UP THE BACKSIDE. GET SOMETHING REAL, LIKE MONEY. Rob Hessenius
