Question for Sail Marine

The strut on my boat has bottom paint on it. Should I remove the paint? I guess so because the dissimilar metals is making a thermal couple and generating stray current.

thermal couple

When two dissimilar metals are joined, in this case copper and bronze or stainless steel, electrons flow from one metal to the other. This flow is a direct relation to temperature therefore the name thermal couple.

the engine - surveyors are NOT diesel mechanics

yes and no. Some have a temperature sensing device that can check for engines running hot. They should also check for the ovious like oil leaks, general condition (paint / rust), motor mounts, hoses, belts, shaft, strut, cutless bearing, etc etc etc.

It's THERMOCOUPLE....not

thermal couple...and they won't generate a "stray" current unless the dissimilar metals are at different temperatures...even then...the current created is between the dissimilar metals...and wouldn't be "stray: at all. Given that both are under the water...and thus at thermodynamic equilibrium, I would say that the current between the two would be insignificant.

Waffle - Thermocouple??

Sorry to belabor the point but is it a thermocouple to which you are referring? I am aware of the theory of dissimilar metals and electrolysis corrosion but not sure of your terms nor of how temperature (in the context of a "thermal couple"), although it can exacerbate galvanic action, can actually cause it?

Warning bells sound like this to me!

The cushions are filthy. Is this honest dirt or long term neglect by a slob? The propeller is shot. Can this happen between haul-outs for bottom painting? Has anyone commented on the cleanliness of the engine, bilge, galley, lockers, or the head. Are the lines in the running rigging whipped or taped or fitted with a butane back splice? How do they look over all? I find that the subtle and not so subtle signs around a person and their property more useful than an in depth study of the property. I know some people that are fanatics about appearances but if it doesn't show and impress they tend to neglect it. This characteristic seems to extend to spouses, children, dogs, lawns, cars, boats and education. so when it comes time for me to consider an aquisition I look not at the shine but at the way the seller has kept the investment in good servicable condition. If you trade cars every five years it may be because new and shiney is important or it may be because you don't have the will to take care of the investment and after five years it needs some serious care that isn't going to show.

I think she needs a survey. I agree with your observations. I already stated I like the sails and canvas too! How work you let your prop get to this state? How is the strut and shaft? Can the buyer do the required repairs themselves? They need a survey that is all we am suggesting.

Agree with Ross

I "borrowed" this from a friend from our C34 'site: "My experience has been that a close observation of the seller and those things surrounding them can often give a clue as to the seller's approach to care & maintenance in general. Rare is the person who lets their car stay dirty, with leaking oil, grating brakes, etc., while meticulously caring for and maintaining their diesel engine & fiberglass boat." The balance of emotions and wanting to sail the boat home, compared to realistically evaluating the boat by trained surveyors, or even volunteers from this 'site, may have serious consequences downstream (no pun intended). I have refrained from entering this discussion until now, but I, too, hear lotsa warning bells, most of them coming from "Basic Sailboat Buying 101" as well as the input from seasoned veterans in this thread. Please, be very, very careful.
