davie, check out the catalina direct mast gate plates, the idea should transfer to your boat well, and shouldn't be hard to make. Basically chokes off the slot so slugs drop past without coming out. When you do need to remove slugs, remove the plate.

The Catalina gates are close, but my track area is flat, not curve. I have access to metal bending equipment, so making something should not be difficult.

Not sure if old posts will bump back up to the top, but we'll try. Getting ready to mount the autopilot and I'm running into a problem. The back of my boat is so narrow, that to mount it in the correct distance from the pivot point will mean that it is fully retracted when going straight. Has anyone built an L shaped bracket at the rudder pivot point and mounted the autopilot longitudinally rather than athwartship?
