I am about to install an opening port in the aft cabin of our 34 Catalina. Has any done this? I am thinking it will provide needed light and ventalilation. Any suggestions? Thanks ron

Ron Sure the factory does this on the new boats :) Ron, you don't say where. There are already two ports into the cockpit. Are you thinking the hull? If so, why would you put an opening port there? I haven't heard of one installed after market, although I think John Coulthard may have had this done to his before he bought his boat. If you want specific C34 assistance, I recommend that you go to www.c34.org and the Forum discussion board. Please also consider joining our C34 International Association. Stu

Stu: Thanks for the input. Yes, I am considering an opening port in the hull... looking for more light and air in the aft cabin. I can't get on the C34 website. How much does it cost to join? I am interested. thanks ron

There's a reason that no boat manufacturer (that I'm aware of) puts an opening hatch in teh side of the hull. If you look at the port lights that are located in the sides of sailboat hulls, you will find that they are non-opening. That is because there is a high probability that they will be under water when the boat is heeled. According to Murphy (whoever he is), if anything can go wrong, it will, and having a portlight open while under water would not make anyone's day. The port lights that Catalina puts in the aft cabin are all in-board, in the cockpit. You might want to seriously reconsider your plan of putting an opening port in teh sside of tghe hull.
