Advice on installing a GPS Map and new Pedestal Guard

My 89 Hunter Legend 37 has the typical Edson pedestal. It also has the weird Hunter pedestal guard wher the 'legs' curve back to the pedestal and are screwed to the tube of the pedestal.

Those screw holes in the pedestal are stripped out.

Has anyone figured out a way to repair and retap those existing holes?
(I prolly could move the bottom legs down and redrill ...)
Or do you reaplce it all with a new guard wil long straight legs that go to the deck? Those then have to have feet drilled and screwed/thru bolted to / thru the deck. I don;t like making holes where water can get in. And the hull liner under the deck kind of makes thru bolting a pain/ugly/problem.
Who's done this?
Advice?
thanks

Please post photos of your current set up.
Thanks Kappy,
In the photo with me, you can see how the guard does not extend to the cockpit bottom, but turns in to the pedestal. There are 4 machine threaded screws that hold the bottom to the pedestal. It's just drilled into the pedestal and all 4 holes are stripped. Even though stripped, it contraption is very stable since it fits through the plate. Note, the stainless bracket is a poor fit to the Edson pedestal.

I want to install a Garmin GPS map so I need a taller guard.

I can buy one and either 1. cut it to fit the existing contraption. 2. Extend the legs to the cockpit sole - which then means adding 'feet' and drilling holes in the sole... :(

How are you planning on mounting it?
Although my pedestal guard does go all the way to the floor, the way my chartplotter is fixed, you don’t need to modify anything.
I only have this picture on file, but basically I bought clamps that clamp to the 1” tubing and has “legs” onto which I bolted the chartplotter’s bracket, with imagination you will figure it

Ringydingydo, I also have an Edson pedestal, but my guard goes through holes in cockpit sole. When I added a chartplotter, I replaced the existing guard with a taller, "bent" guard that's also through-bolted to the cockpit sole. Probably not what you want to hear.

Thanks, Fred. I have seen others take that approach.

I plan to replace the guard with a taller 'bent' one with a navpod container for the chartplotter. NavPod sells the guards to fit the Edson 9.5 and 12" brackets - as does Edson. (NavPod has a 25 degree bend and Edson has 18 degrees - Edson costs more).

Since you have done what I plan to do.
1. Where did you run power to the chartplotter - up through the guard legs from under deck? Or drill through the pedestal and steal current from the compass? I doubt people feed power up the guard leg.

2. (Nevermind, I see you said thru-bolted) When you installed the long leg guard, did you thru bolt the feet thru the cockpit sole or screw them in from the top? On the Legend 37 there is a fiberglass liner that is separate from the cockpit sole, hence it is not obvious how you secured the feet? NavPod sells feet with screws, Edson sellls feet with bolts.

NAvPod feet: SS100-CIR-KIT - Feet Pair Kit - Stainless Steel Feet for 1" Diameter AngleGuards (Round Base) - NavPod
Edson feet: Stainless Pedestal Guard Mounting Feet - pair

Yes

There are a pair of feet with allen screws, one for each leg. The feet are through-bolted to the cockpit sole, and the allen screws keep the pedestal legs in place. Sorry, no photos at hand, but they look just like the feet in your second link.

I have my GPSMap740 mounted on a arm that extends away from the guard…

The wires run down through the pedestal legs. But you may be able to run them into the pedestal itself if you can keep them away from the chain or gears in there.

Tally Ho, I'd take that picture to with 31kts!

I have thought about mounting mine you you did on an arm. Certainly less to do and $500 cheaper.
How do you feel about that choice?
Would you do it again or does it get in the way?
Do people reach for it and pull it to the side?
What brand did you use?

The power to the compass and shift / throttle cables are already in the pedestal.

I bought the boat with that mount and chart plotter on it. I made some adjustments to the base plate of the plotter so I can swivel it around when I am sitting on either of the benches. And the mount on the Chartplotter allows me to tilt it up when I am standing to helm or tilt it down when I am sitting at the helm seat. I like fact that I can move it around to fit.

No issues with people grabbing it, but it does stick out a bit…but no more than my 40” destroyer wheel. I go around the wheel on both sides of the pedestal, and don’t even notice the Chartplotter plotter. Your wheel looks really large, so I don’t think this mount would be an issue.

it would certainly be a lower cost, simpler install than replacing the pedestal guard with a new one. I think the arm mount is also by Edson. Check their website site.

Yeah, that was a fun sail, I don’t see 7+ knots of boat speed that often. (Hull speed for my O’Day 322 is 6.9 knots). Can’t remember if that was jib only or if I had both sails up. We had a spurt of very windy days in July.
