I'm not doing anything until I know what hurricane Ivan is going to do but, I've run across a 1978 standard rig, fin keel, standard cabin with an outboard that I may be interested in. It looks like a booger and smells mildewed but a lot of elbow grease and some paint would do wonders. It has definately been let go. If it has probems I don't think they've been covered up. It is in the water so I can't tell much about the bottom. It's been for sale for awhile and the fellow is talking about $2500 because the slip fees are high and getting higher. How wrong could I go? Also is anyone else unable to access www.catalina27.org ?

Catalina 27 purchase

Hi We are about to buy a Catalina 27, 1976 hull 2800 ....for $10,000 ....so your price seems real good. This one has an inboard gas engine, 18hp, with furling ....so it has some plusses. Hey, do you know where I can find an owner's manaul for a Cat 27? Either online or by order. Dick

It can be a Beauty

I did the same thing several years ago. Paid a little over the 2.5k. Lots of elbow grease inside, incl: total wipe down with fantastic that let me find any leaks, ports, thru cabin fitting like stanctions, etc. Lots of lemon oil on the interior wood brought back the original finish, (little stain helped), Then I tackled the leak problems from the outside. Over the winter took off the teak and refinished it. Still wrestling with the exterior gel coat but I will get it right over time. Good articals on this site and on sailnet on 'how to's', plus ask questions on this site they will give you lots of advice. Good luck.

C27 Owner's Manual

Dick, a couple of versions of owner's manual, as well as sales brochures are on the C27.org website, when it's operational. Peter

Grab It . . .

It sounds good, but check a few things first: Look in the bilge and check the keel bolts. There's no worry as long as they are there, and not completely rusted away. However, no keel has ever departed a C-27 that I've heard of (anyone)? Grab a mask, flippers and a waterproof flashlight and check the forward part of the keel for damage from any hard groundings. (Or have someone else do it if that's a problem for you). Go up the mast and check the spreader brackets for cracks. There is a stainless steel upgrade for these and the older ones can fail without warning. Check the four bulkheads (if it's a dinette model) for water damage and that they are still solid. Check where the chain plates (that anchors the standing rigging) attach to the bulkheads for tightness and security. Check around the bottom of the post that supports the mast for water damage. Find out how old the standing rigging is, anything over ten years is pushing it. Other than that everything else is small potatoes. If Ivan spares her, grab it . . . Nick "Julia Bell" C-27, #86

Survey

Get a good marine survey. It will be worth the money...and be sure it is done by a sailor...most likely he'll be familiar with your model boat. My last survey in Dallas was $14 a foot. They have an office in FL: www.bluewatersurveyors.com/

Thanks folks but Ivan has his own agenda

Thanks to all of you for your advice. I have never gotten so much response on a bbs as a newbie. You guys are super in my book. Unfortunately, it looks like we are directly in the forecasted path of Ivan. We had Dennis, Floyd and Isabel (houses wiped away and a 1500 ft. breach in the island opened up less than 20 miles from our house) while we were on Hatteras island in North Carolina. This month, here we've had Charley (we were 8 miles from the eye) and Francis. This is the first hurricane I have had a really bad feeling about. We plan to evacuate to Macon,Georgia so we'll be fine. I just hope we have a house to come home to after it's over. Anyway, enough gloom and doom. The name of my current boat, a Siren 17, is Cest la Vie. One way or another life goes on. Thanks again. Jerry
