I'm purchasing a 98 376 with the adlar Barbar refrig/freezer that has the water pump cooling. Since I live in Phoenix and only get over to SD about 1x/month, do I live the fridg/freezer on 24/7? If so do you leave the water pump on 24/7? Can you run the refridg/freezer w/o the water pump? Or will it overheat? Those of you with this system I need your opinion.

ref / freezer

bob you must have the water pump operating or the unit will not work at all, plus check the water strainer at least every two weeks or so depending on what it picks up. good luck with your new boat ken

Ken that's not correct

I have a '97 376 with the Adler/Barbour refer in San Diego. We never use the water cooling and run the fridge 24/7. If you read the manual it will tell you the water cooling is only necessary when the ambient temp reaches above I believe 90 degrees. Never happens on a boat docked in San Diego. The thermostatically controlled air cooler on the unit is plenty in order to leave it running all the time. One downside is that you will need to make sure you keep an eye on your water level in your batteries. Running the fridge cycles them regularly and you will go through a lot of water. Make sure you top of your batteries on that monthly visit.

Pump REALLY not needed

Bob: i just had my 5 year old A/B unit worked on, and the tech guy told me that the water pump isn't needed until outside temp reaches 130 degrees. Obviously for virtually all of us in the USA the pump provides a huge safety margin. Good Luck........ Jeff

Yes and no.

My H34 ref/freezer uses much less energy when the water pump is working properly. Why leave it on, though? It cools down very nicely in 15-20 minutes. Any perishables left for too long are probably perished anyway. Cold beer you can pick up on the way to the boat. If you run fridge and it fails while you are gone the repair/replacement could be expensive. If you don't run the fridge you only need to check that the pump is actually pumping water (wasps like to build nests in the outlet). Maybe the biggest reason is that it hurts nothing to turn it off when you are gone.

Fridge water pump

I have a 376 with the duel air/water cooling. The down side to useing water cooling 24/7 is if the intake gets blocked, weed/plastic etc. you lose the pump and have warm food and drink. If using the air cooling make sure there are vent holes into compartment that houses the unit. If I leave mine on when away from the boat I lift the cushion and bunk lid to allow the heat to dissapate as quickly as it can. Only drawback is the heat is put into the boat, so when I arrive at the boat I switch the pump on straight away. My problem is icing up quickly due to air leakage around the lids. My dealer has been fixing this for the last 3 years !!! Tony
