Hi all, Merry X-mas. I have a ? on type of adhesive to use for a project. I am thinking of making a companionway hatch "garage" , I will call it. It will be oak and teak, and will cover the front 3/4s of my hatch. The existing hatch will slide inside, to the point its fully open. It will cover my existing hatch, see pics, its for the front hatch, I had better pics of the aft hatch. My ? is, waht type of adhesive/caulk should I use, I am going to pull it down with screws from the inside of the salon cieling. I am afraid of 5200 as I may have to some day remove it, however I would like it to keep water out from under. Maybe, "Maines" Bed-It Tape we use for deck fixtures?? Anybody have a thought..The one pic of the front hatch, its off as i was trying to seal up some leaks at the time. Thanks Red

I'm not sure I understand the concept you are after with the 'Garage', but no worries, the answer to your question is easy. Like you said, 5200 is not the right choice, especially if you ever want to remove it. 4200 stays pliable and is good for this application but can be messy to install, so you'd want to tape off the area around the application site. The Maine's grey strips you mention I'm sure is Butyle Tape (I've just never seen that name brand before), and is also an excellent choice. Probably easier to install with less fuss, just remember not to over-torque the screws. Tighten them firmly the first time, then go back the next day and firm them up some more to allow the squeeze out. Check them again a day later, another turn may or may not be needed.

I think the nautical "salty" term for a "hatch garage" is sea hood.

Good idea I think. I've thought about making one myself. Take lots of pics as you proceed and post them .... I'd love to see how it goes.

FYI, oak doesn't hold up to weather like teak does. Not sure how you are going to use it, but make sure you seal it well. It will warp if left unprotected. Not a good choice in my opinion.

White Oak would work fine. It was after all THE choice for sailing ships for hundreds of years.
