Adding Radar

I am looking into adding radar to my 1983 30. Someone suggested I pull the mast so that the cable can come directly down the mast and thru the mast base rather than drilling a hole in the side of the mast and another hole in the deck. Anyone have any ideas one way or the other? Thanks, Hunt

Radar

I fastened my cable to the outside of the Mast and drilled a hole in the deck.

Radar pole?

I faced the same problem and ended up putting a radar pole on the stern corner with the radar, GPS, and VHF antenna on it. I took off the vent opening and made a teak base to cover it that the pole base fit. Cables then run thru the pole into the old vent hole and down into the lazarette then to the main cabin. Never drilled a hole. I worried about the mast in the front blocking the radar, but not at all. Able to see out 15 miles, more or less.

How high is your pole?

I'm curious as to how high a pole is needed aft to get 15 mile coverage.

Edson Pole

Purchased the stock Edson pole and mount (it's aluminum coated gold so don't be shocked at the price). Did not cut it down so it is well above our heads in the cockpit (RF energy). Can't remember how tall but it is stock and mounted on the coaming so base is around 4 ft from water.

Hunt; Have you considered mounting the radome on an articulated backstay mount? Closer to the deck, easier to service in case of problems and no pole to mess with.
