What are my options for adding a tach to my diesel? YSM-12. I need to find the proper prop pitch and I can't do it with out a tach.

I have a hitachi 35 amp. The original to the motor.
So, most diesels with tachs use the alternator "tach out" for a signal to the tachometer. As I recall, you have a Yanmar engine in your boat, rather than the standard M25 diesel, so I look to the Yanmar guys to help out here. But alternators are all pretty much the same: find and run the tach out wire to the tach, ground the meter and you're done.

Is there an adjustment for the different ratios of pullies? I see the tach hook up on the back of the alternator but is there a special tach for this engine and alternator combo?

Hermit,
I needed to replace the tach on my Westerbeke and I found a universal tach that hooked to the alt. and had settings on the back to adjust to the motor, basically I flipped the switch's untill the tach read 800 rpm which is what the engine should have been at idle,I ended up borrowing a mechanical tach to hold against the front pulley and I was right on with the rpm's.

Thanks Rad, I will save those links. I didn't want to buy one specific to my engine set up, becasue I may replace the engine soon.

Those tachs are universal so if you change engines ya just have reset the tach settings for the engine
