It is getting hot here in Florida, so I'm thinking about installing an AC system on my '83 C - 30. Someone recommended a 10,000 BTU Cruisair system. I understand it costs about $2,500 (not including installation). Does anyone have an opinion on this or any other system that works well? I want something that cools the boat relatively fast and will work well in 90 degree plus conditions. Also, where is the best place to install it? Thanks so much.

I installed a 12K reverse cycle three years ago in my C30 for half that price. In Florida, you probably wouldn't need reverse cycle - electric heat would suffice. You'll save about $100. Bought mine from Defender. They list in the current catalog for about $1200 or so. Installed mine in port side cockpit locker with venting into galley, head and v-berth. Air return to unit thru the wall of aft berth. Unit sits low in the locker as anything stored that far down never gets used anyway. Also, it's quieter back there. Install took me about three days. It's been trouble free and handles the NC heat very well. Good luck.

Go with the 16k BTU
Installed a 16k mermaid reverse cycle about a year ago and it does a great job on my C30. Two of my slip neighbors each have the 12k and both wish they had gone with the 16k. I'm South Texas and can relate to the hot humid conditions. Also, the port lazarette is the best place to put it. Seen it here

about the upcoming meeting! I had been wondering if there was an owners association around this part of the country! One more thing about Mermaid. Definitely order it through Defender as they were actually cheaper than Mermaid direct!

Here's a link to the Defender website. Its not a good site for browsing but, if you know what you're looking for, the search page will usually turn it up. I have ordered through their site and it does work...its not as elegant as, for example, West Marine's site that sends you emails acknowledging the order and then again when it ships, but their prices are generally better...sometimes much better.
