A watch for standing watch

I would like a watch with a built in alarm that I can set to go off at a set interval - say every 5 minutes. We often only have one person on watch at a time and an alarm to remind the watch officer to look around would be helpful. I don't want to have to reset each time. I once used an old fashioned egg timer, but I think there must be something better. Any suggestions?

Good idea for an app

My smart phone allows me to set an alarm and the snooze time span. So instead of stopping the alarm each time I would hit the snooze button. This would remind at 5 minutes or whatever snooze time I set.

You need a ships bell - besides the ringing part it is really cool to have.

A ship's bell is used to indicate the time aboard a ship and hence to regulate the sailors' duty watches. The bell itself is usually made of brass or bronze and normally has the ship's name engraved or cast on it.
Number of bells Bell pattern Hour (a.m. and p.m.) One bell . 12:30 4:30 8:30 Two bells .. 1:00 5:00 9:00 Three bells .. . 1:30 5:30 9:30 Four bells .. .. 2:00 6:00 10:00 Five bells .. .. . 2:30 6:30 10:30 Six bells .. .. .. 3:00 7:00 11:00 Seven bells .. .. .. . 3:30 7:30 11:30 Eight bells .. .. .. .. 4:00 8:00 12:00 "Eight bells" can also be a way of saying that a sailor's watch is over

I have several Suunto watches, sadly the countdown timers do not loop.

The race timer on Ronstan and Optimum Time races watches do, but they beep on every minute and go crazy on the last. Not exactly ideal.

NO,

You only need a watch that features multiple time alarm sets.
Besides, a wristwatch doesn't have to be handheld & will not be prone to dropping.

Plus, most have a nite time illuminated dial, what more can you ask for.

Keep it simple, buy a damn watch.

Mine does; the Suunto M3-- but there may be more beeps in each cycle than are wished for.

2. USING RACE TIMER
The Suunto M3 helps you to optimize the timing for the race start so that you can
cross the start line at the right time. This helps you get ahead of your opponents and
avoid turbulence from the other boats in front of you.

The race timer helps you to follow the official race start countdown.
1. Long press the MODE button to switch to the Timer view.
2. Press ENTER and select Start time.
3. Enter the countdown time with the UP/DOWN buttons. For example, if the official
signal is given 5 minutes before the start, enter 5.
4. At the official signal, press UP to start the countdown on the Suunto M3.
TIP: You can set the timer to repeat the countdown. This is useful if there are
several race starts, for example, for different boat classes.

For what it's worth, the ol' egg timer is hard to beat while snoozing at the helm. Simple, cheap, effective, reliable.

OR, you can go spend a hundred bucks at another electronic toy..

I purchased a timer for my weight room. I can set it at any interval I want. Maybe what you are looking for can be found at Dick's sporting goods or some such place.

I like that idea... you get the visceral experience of slapping the little lever. ... and they look nautical

:D
Chess clocks do not sound alarms. They're often used in tournament play where dozens of games might be going on simultaneously in a room. When a player pushes the lever or button on his side of the clock, that stops his clock and starts the opponent's clock, and vice-versa. The clocks are set so when a player runs out of time, a little "flag" (seen near 11 on this model) is raised and then falls as the minute hand passes under it the last time b/f a player's time expires. You'd have to be looking at it to notice. Your opponent says: "Your flag has fallen." or "Your flag is down." (or vice-versa) and the game is over.

I have always used the good old fashioned twist dial kitchen timer. A loud ringer and no chance in the world of the battery dying or the electronics failing. I've tried the electronic ones and they have way too many features and aren't anywhere near loud enough, if one is pretty tired. Save your money for some other toy, like AIS, and spend a whopping $4.95 on a really good, perfectly efficient tool for the job.
