A little H37C help.

Hi Pete, Congratulations on your new boat! Your questions are good ones and I have the same ones. I did investigate moving the traveler but have decided to leave it on the bridgedeck. I like having complete control of the main. I keep everthing at the traveler, bought new Garhauer fiddles, one with a cam cleat. Did not like the lack of response with the mainsheet going forward and then back to the cabin winch. If I were to move it I would use the Garhauer, link below. I think that if you do move it you have to spend some bucks. You want to be sure that you can manage it from the helm. I have not tackled the frig yet. But I plan to: 1) seal off the drain to prevent cold loss, 2) put a permanent insulated cover over the part in the starboard locker, 3) insulate the inside top-opening door, and 4) use spray foam to insulate the sides. Like you I have not yet determined the amps necessary to keep it cool. Mine is 110v only through an inverter so is probably not very efficient. I'll probably have to replace it, maybe with the unit at this web-site: http://www.askelandinc.com/ Can't help much with the prop question since I have the 20hp Yanmar. I bought the Flex-O-Fold two-blade because I am more interested in sailing. They make a nice three-blade and could probably help you. See: http://www.flexofold.dk/ Good luck. Ed schencked@bfusa.com

Prop

Chet, I have a 1984 37C with a 4 cyl, 40 hp Yanmar engine. I don't know the gear box gearing, but I have a fixed, three blade prop, 15RH14, and it works just fine. I usually cruise at about 3500 to 3800 rpm at about 6.5 to 7.0 knots. Hope this helps. Bob Gusty Getaway

More 37C help

Chet, I have moved my traveler to the cabin top using the Garhauer hardware. It's quite easy to do and will run about $600.00 if you do it yourself. I am quite pleased with the results and I have freed up the cockpit for other things. I am also in the process of replacing portlights and have made many other mods as well, many of them from Gene's recomendations on his "Rainbow Chaser" website. I am within a few miles of you in Merritt Island and would be happy to talk further with you if you like. Contact me at hadoult@aol.com. Congradulations on your new 37C! It's a great boat. 1001 questions

I am constantly amazed by how inconsistent the 37c appear from year to year. I also have a 1984 and when I read about travelers, iceboxes, etc - I don't recognize my own boat. I have the Yanmar 40HP engine- traveler not (nor has ever been) in the cockpit, 2 bladed prop. We do seem to share the same problems - leaking holding tanks, mysterious drain from the reefer, water leaks, etc. In response to the questions asked, I have only one really good suggestion: As a fine wine connoisseur, I use the kevlar like material from empty (and much appreciated) 5 liter wine box bladders as insulation inside the lazerette entrance to the icebox. Filling the used bladders with water, freezing into the same shape as the condenser, then placing around the condenser immensely increases the efficiency of the refrigeration unit. The 37c is a fine boat but must be adapted to the area sailed. In Hawaii, the designed sails don't cut the mustard. I very seldom use the staysail and have added a 130% furlable jib, which can be used in light winds to the 20 trades. The only other suggestion I would have is to keep reading the posted articles; I have had my 37c for 9 years and constantly learn new stuff from this website. Kalaukia
