Hello! I am a newbie to this site, and have a 1977 O'Day 22 I bought a year ago and have a few questions... So I am turning to the collective wisdom of fellow O'Day owners for guidance, please...
Quick history... I bought my O'Day from a youth camp late last summer. The previous owner was the camp director, he bought the boat in the late '90s planning to incorporate a sailing component into camp activities. He passed away last summer, and since no one else on camp staff know how to sail, they sold the boat (to me!). I got her home and spent a couple weeks doing the requisite clean-up for a boat that was untouched for a number of years (although in a barn). We launched last September for the first time, motored her home to our dock using the cute little 5hp Evinrude, stepped the mast, and when I raised the mainsail for the first time, voila! The sail was too big! Its for a 22 Fractional rig, I have the Masthead... I called the camp to ask if they had any other sails tucked away somewhere...nope. All they remembered is the old camp director had bought a new sail with the boat years ago. Its a Neil Pride made for the O'Day 22, he just ordered the wrong one. I was able to mess around on the water a coupla days flying the jib (a storm jib it turns out). So, over winter I ordered and sewed a sail kit I ordered from SailRite (I do leather working, so wasn't afraid to tackle a sewing project. Just ignorant it turns out! WHEW!) So this spring, we had a fairly warmup and once the worst of the stormy weather was over, we launch our newly named "Miss Mollie" and motored her home. Plans for stepping the mast and going out on her first OFFICIAL outing were made. And then my diabetic retinopathy struck and I have been blind in the right eye since June. One round of laser surgery done, another round in 2 weeks. And so Miss Mollie sits at the dock with no mast... I do go down and sit on deck most mornings to watch the sunrise... And look forward to getting my vision back so I can get sailing!!!
okay, question 1: MM has a few electrical systems on-board - lights, and 2-way radio. But there was no battery. Would like to get a battery and a solar charger (although we have electric at the dock so could also go with ac plugin charger too) What battery would be appropriate? I do not anticipate adding any other electrical components. I assume a standard marine deep cycle would be best. We just plan to sail her here on Lake Springfield, so it is all just day sailing.
question 2: MM has the pump water handle, but there is no water storage container and the plastic tubing is rotted. Any recommendations for replacements?
That covers it for today, I am certain I'll have more issues as I actually get time on her on the water. Thanks in advance!
