I'm in the process of restoring a 1984 Hunter 25.5. I dropped the mast this week for various repairs and found a small message lying in the cockpit floor. It must have come out of the mast somewhere. I assume it was put up there at the factory. I’ll put it back in when I send her back up.

but owners do it for luck, like cabinetmakers years back did when building a home,

It was a old tradition for ship builders to place a coin under the mas when stepping it. It was to bring good luck to the ship and her crew. Ancient Romans placed a coin there so that the crew could pay there way to the after life if the ship was wrecked. Some ship builders now weld a coin under the radar mast.

Cool! I put two 1971 silver dollars under my mast when I fixed the rotted wood. Luck and to pay the gods for my after life passage.
