Very simply, how am I supposed to read this dipstick? Oil line right on the grooved line? Above it? Up tot eh hole? Something else? Thanks for any help and sorry for what I am sure is a silly question.

Boat is 1984 Morgan 323.

Usually just up to the line, for most with the stick fully inserted but not screwed down, not much oil, usually measured in fractions of less than half a quart.

Helps to know the Xmission make but the stick appears the same as everything else one sees here.

The fluid is filled TO the line. But even more important than that, is that the dip stick is not screwed into the Xmission casing when checking the fluid level.

Please refer to these threads below where the level should be filled to. Please be careful not to overfill since the transmission case holds a very small of oil.

Just went through this myself on our 3YM30. I pumped out the old fluid, and replaced with the listed capacity of 300 mL. The level was here (With dipstick screwed in):

Turns out that was too much. After a test run it was all foamy. After reading the link in post 4 above, I pumped it all out and drained it from the drain plug. 320mL came out, so there must’ve been a little left in after the first pump out. I put 275 mL back in, and the level was here (with dipstick unscrewed):

No more foam after that, so that’s what I’m going with.

Thanks to you all I am now more enlightened and on my way to being a transmission specialist :what:. Today I took pictures and figured out more about the transmission (a much neglected part of my 1 yr ownership of this boat). It turns out to be a Kanzaki KM3-A based on the plaque on the back and out of sight until today with a mirror and camera. It helpfully lists the oil requirement as SAE 20/30 HD. @ .3 Liters.

I was alarmed to recall that the boat came with a bottle of ATF transmission oil and realize that most likely it was filled with the wrong oil. I used a revised version of your helpful paper towel technique and came up with these results (see image).

"Trans Sample" was a little off color, but suspiciously similar to the "Fresh ATF" sample. It certainly did not look like the "Engine Sample (SAE30)" or "Fresh SAE 30".

Now I know that I need to extract the ATF oil and replace with .3L of SAE 30 HD. Also I now know how to read the dipstick... which is where this started. Isn't that just like sailboats? To start one place, take a circuitous route and end up some place you didn't quite expect?

Thank you for all of the helpful help.

Years ago, I took a one day diesel engine care seminar given by Mack Boring, the regional Yanmar dealer in NJ. On the topic of reading the trans dipstick, the instructor suggested that we paint the bottom of the dipstick with white paint and that would make it much easier to read the fluid level.
