I need general advice on my boat transom, its not solid it has a inner and outer pieces ,I don't think it will support a newer9.9 thruster motor with much power from the prop. have a older 7.5 mercury which isn't sufficient to power the boat on a windy day. I think that the whole transom needs to be beefed up to be on the safe side . I don't have the expertise to jump in I need some one that has more knowledge in boat repair or building.whos got some info for a new sailor? Ive done carpentry work for 30yrs and some fiberglass work ,but I need some help!

There is a product called Seacast specifically made to do structural repairs to boat transoms. http://www.transomrepair.net There are some "How To" videos on that site and YouTube.com which will give you a basic idea of the product and process. You will probably have to come up with a procedure to pour the product into the hollow area between the inner and outer fiberglass skins of your boat as I can't determine the best method based on your photos.

I find it odd that a 7.5 is under powered for a 22'. I've used a 7.5 on a Cornoado 25 which is a much heavier boat. And I've owned a few 22's and used a 5 hp on those. I was at hull speed at half throttle in most conditions. I'm wondering if your 7.5 has some issues. I'd think a new Tohatsu 6 sailpro with the high thrust prop would push a 22' at hull speed at half throttle or less.... And if it is your 7.5 that is the problem... there are a lot of good reasons to stay with a smaller outboard. 1) Better economy 2) Easier to lift off the boat for maintenance 3) Less weight aft so the boat sails better etc.

And I think the rating for the transom has more to do with the weight of the outboard than the thrust. Have you done a search for the Hunter 22 to see what the recommended maximum outboard size should be. A 9.9 might still be okay and the newer ones are not as heavy as the older ones.

Hear here to rgranger, I have a 1981 H22 and I use a Tohatsu 6hp with no problems. You may have additional wind issues (?) with the extra topside gear of the bimini and stern railing shown in your pictures as compared to mine, which has neither. So maybe you might warrant additional hp...?

Also, my stern is wood cored, and am surprised that yours is not as well. I don't believe they changed the construction techniques during this run of boats.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I had a 1981 Hunter 22 that was pushed by a 4.5hp outboard. This did a good job and handled the Chesapeake Bay, even in some pretty rough water.

It isn't a hard job that you are talking about. Beefing up the transom shouldn't be that hard. I would also suggest making the biggest backing plate possible so that the mounting holes stress is spread out over as much area as possible.

I'll second or third rgranger, check the engine

If its running well, make sure you have the right prop on it. Since you are on a lake you shouldn't be dealing with tides or currents.

The transom on my Oday is not cored, but has a plywood backer glassed in place. The transom does flex when powering up. I have an 8 horse sailmaster 2 stroke. It will do 6 knots at half throttle. When it is windy I need 1/4 throttle or more to keep headed to wind and have plenty power in reserve to maneuver. There are times when docking that the wind or current is not favorable and I have to do some quick blasts of power and seem to have enough.

I would make sure the engine is running correctly first and that it is making full throttle. Then check the prop selection for best thrust.

After all that, if you still need to replace the outboard and reinforce the transom, can you get to the inside of it by crawling down a settee or cockpit locker? Then you could glass in a piece of plywood backing with west system and glass cloth. Just have someone standing by to drag you out when you pass out from the fumes !!!

outboard for hunter 22

I dunno: Ive got a pearson 26w displaces 5200 lbs. about twice the displacement of your Hunter 22 I push it with an 8 hp tohatsu I have never run it over 1/2 throttle to obtain hull speed, except on the rare occasion when I had to motor into a heavy wind and sea I would think a 5hp would be more than adequite. Please do not make the mistake of buying a motior that is too heavy and big for your boat

Always, always, always get a high thrust prop for a sailboat. The prop that comes stock on these small motors is always pitched for running a lightweight aluminum fishing-type boat, which can get on plane. Our boats are always heavier, and displacement, so larger diameter and lower pitch is required to give enough thrust, and to allow the motor to operate in higher RPM ranges so that it has power. Re-propping your current motor will do a world of good for you.
