'78 Catalina 27 rudder problems?

I'm looking at a '78 Catalina 27 and talked to a surveyor who indicated that this year had a problem with rudders falling off. Anyone know anything about this? Didn't see anything in the forums.

Suzan I own a 78 27 and haven"t heard of this and quite frankly I hope not too.I'm in your area and am curious to hear more of what you migth find out. I hauled out in may to do the bottom and didn't find anything that would tip me off to a possible problem. I believe the rudder to be made of fiberglass. [I can only hope it might float if it ever drops off.]I know the fellow {quite well }that sold me this boat a few years back,and he owned it for 10yrs. with no problems of this sort. So I hope this is maybe a isolated incidance that the surveor as mentioned.Anyways I hope you find the boat of your dreams .I did. Good Luck keep in touch [Ken on the falcon]

Rudder falling off

I suppose if the bolt involved in holding the rudder shaft in place were allowed to fall out the rudder would fall out. Otherwise your surveyer certainly didn't know what he was talking about. It is amazing how many surveyers have really bad information.
