I am looking into replaceing my old yanmar ysm12. Tech support at Catalina tells me that the Universal M25xpb is the powerplant they are currently installing in their new C300's and that the engine compartment is the basicly the same size and design (save the cabinet drawer) as my old one. As the M25xpb is a taller engine i am very concerned about it's installation and impact. While doing my research i've noticed that the "oil pan" dept for each engine are dramaticly different ~ the old yanmar is 3.5in while the M25xpb is 7in. Should i be overly concerned about this? The tech at Catalina mentioned their "dome" shaped engine cover (part #80238) which is used to cover the taller engine. She seemed to think that it will satify the 25xpb height issues? Is that the case or should i expect to loose some of my dinette seating, in addition to my cabinet drawer, with the taller engine? I have and still am considering the Universal 3m-20b, should i go with it instead? Is there a link that discribes both or either powerplant conversations/installations? ~ On a related note: I have been holding off on moving the clutch and throttle controls up to an after market pestal mount (catalinedirect.cm Product #Z2288). It seems like this is a good time to do it? Any thoughts? Thx Jax

Just repowered my 1977 C30

Jax, I just repowered my 1977 Cat 30 last fall with a Universal M3-20. Thought about the MX25 but, was concerned about the size. I think it would have fit but, am very happy with the M3-20. I had a YSM-12 also...quite a job...had to redo both stringers; knock them out, constructed new ones out of oak blocks and fiberglass matting and epoxy. It was a learning experience and had a few bumps but everything went fairly well...take my advice and epoxy some lag bolts into the new stringers you put in. Those are the ones with the lag on the bottom half and machine screw threads on the upper half. Good luck with your project.

Re: Just repowered my 1977 C30

Randy, thanks for the note. is the m3-20b delivering enough hp to satify your needs? (a straight shot'n ole timer told me that short of big weather or heavy ocean current the extra horsepower would be "just burn'n fuel and push'n water".) ~ I am hoping that he is right. is your motor/cruising speeed still +/- 6.5 knots? did you loose any of your dinette seating due to the the 20b install? did you dry doc or have the engine craned in while still a float? my ysm12 was very loud and it jumped all over the place. is the 20b as smooth and quite as you had hoped? Thx for your insight. jax Postscript: if you had it to do again, what (if anything) would you do differently?

Seen the M25 repower and...

It will fit - barely. The bubbled cover under the seat cushion won't be noticeable, the engine pulleys are farther fwd, so some alterations need to be made on the fwd engine compartment, but they are not noticeable from the exterior. I'd go with the M25, as recommended from the mfgr. I also had that same recommendation from my local boatyard who has done several of these installs (Gallery Marine in Seattle). BTW, It ain't cheap ($12-14K)...

Thoughts on Yanmar

Any thoughts on a Yanmar 3GM30F? I located a low hour engine for short money. My first impression is that is is a bit tall but I have heard of bumping the seat up. The YSB12 is not running well at all.

I have the same engine in my C320. It's been great so far, and very easy to work on.

Link of Interest

Gents: Here is a link with some pricing for new power plants. I believe that they can quote engines not shown of their current price list if you call. Just ask for one for sale guys. Further, brace yourself for their shipping cost. They must be recovering some of their margin there. The upside of shipping is that they say that they will ship directly to your crane operator/machinic. These are the best prices I can find for new engines. Has anyone found better? Sorry to bore you with this blather... jax
