My trusty 5411 Universal diesel has given up the ghost. I am about to purchase and install a Universal m3-20b. I am sure this has been done before, so if anyone has specific info on the modifications required I would really appreciate any and all replies. Since I haven't yet purchased the new engine,is there an easier swap?By the way this is a 1979 hull # 1471.

new engine

I would check with a good mechanic or catalina dealer. Might be easier to replace with the original engine if possible.

First choice

I agree with you,but this engine has not been manufactured since about 1982 or 1983.

Go for it!

Should be a drop in replacement. All the small Universal B-Series engines were replacements for the Atomic 4 and should be interchangeable. You probably can use your old prop, but re-pitch it for all that extra HP you will have. The M3-20 was the standard engine for the C30 in the early 90's. I regulary sail on one, and it is very smooth and has plenty of power.

5411

Harvey; I'd rebuild that trusty 5411. You already have everything in the way of ancilliary parts you need. The block is by Kubota and they have a big presence in North America. Look for farm equipment dealers in your area.

Upgrade !

Save your rear motor mount brackets. They will be absolutely necessary to achieve the correct engine to propshaft alignment. These brackets are the ones made of heavy guage steel bolted to your 5411 bell housing. A new exhaust riser, and possible realignment of the aqualift muffler will be required. You will need to order a new setee hatch and fiberglass blister for the setee hatch from Catalina Yachts. If you like your boat, and plan on keeping her for the foreseeable future, this upgrade will prove very worthwhile.

I did it 2 years ago

This m3-20b will fit in very well. its profile will be a little higher, so that it will be necessary to have an unpholsterer make an indentation in your seat cushion above it; or you can have your seats in the dinning area raised about an inch, which is what I did since I was getting new upholstery. It takes a replacement prop which is somewhat bigger and of a diffent pitch to develop the correct power. It can push a cat-30 along at 5.5 miles per hour against a good sea and head wind which is very good. It is a high torque engne in that cruising speed is between 2500 to 3000 rpm instead of the usual 2000, so it can sound a bit noisy on a long term basis. I usually run mine at 2000 just getting in and out for a sail and it will push it along at 5mph plus in smooth water this way. At higher rpm's for long running times, I have put in my foam ear plugs. It's been very reliable and only uses about half a gallon of deisel per hour. Good luck.

Thanks

This is what I needed to hear. I just did not want to think that I was alone in this swap. I'll post again as this project advances.

M3-20B Repoewer Price tag

Just checked on the repower cost. Engine is about 6K. labor & add-on parts comes to another 6K for a quality job (i.e. water seperator, sea strainer, FWC). The coupling to the tranny from the 5411 should fit, so nothing new needed there. Altoghther, 12K (so start saving now!)
