5411 thermostat-less

My dealer was repairing the water muffler on a 5411 - cat 30. He decided the thermostat was sticking, but that I didn't need it because we are out of the water from Nov thru April. (fair weather use)How will that effect us? What will the exhaust characteristics be?

5411 THERMOSTAT

We had a thread on this issue, responding to a similar question that I posted, about my 5411 in a C-27. It wound up in Mainsheet. Prevailing wisdom is that if if the thermostat were not needed it would not have been designed in.For my part, I have not been able, for a number of reasons, to put a thermostat in this summer. The engine runs fine, pumps a lot of water, and runs cool. I have had no trouble, other than having to remove some soot from the stern with Soft Scrub from time to time. I do plan to 'screw my courage to the sticking post' and add a thermostat as part of recommissioning in the spring, (I also sail only May to November ).Roger C27 5012 (1982) Cape Cod

I had a chance to do more research and found that the reason for the thermostat is to accomodate more rapid heating of the hot water system.If you have an electric water heater the point may be moot. The heat exchanger will still provide hot water by the end of your sail/motoring.Any other opinions or facts?thanks allJoe
