I have an '81 C-30 with the 5411 diesel. When I purchased the boat this Spring there was a budget water strainer mounted just inside the access hatch that faces the bow. The yard mechanics told me to change it out for safety reasons as it was not intended for marine applications and could easily break, leak and sink the boat as it is plumbed to the through hull fitting for water intake. I replaced it with a new one from Catalina Direct recommended for the C-30. I located in the same place as the the strainer I removed. The new one being larger is now being pushed against the water pump belt as I try to mount and close the access hatch. I believe if thesse boats are to have stainers they must be located some place else. No indication of where that should be based on owners manual for the 5411. In fact, they do not show any sea water strainer in the manual. Any suggestions on where and how these strainers are being mounted would be appreciated. I am about ready to just deep six the whole strainer idea all together and plumb directly from the water intake through hull fitting to the water pump as shown in the 5411 owners manual.

Most 5411s, regardless of what boat they sit in, were installed with no strainer so it's location becomes largely a matter of owner preference. Close to the seacock and readily accessible are the two determining factors.

Don,

Thanks. I was afraid that was the answer. I will now have to determine a suitable location where I can mount a bracket to hold the strainer. This will also involve making a custom bracket. There is not a lot of things to be screwing brackets into around that engine. I'll come up with something.

I have an 1980 C 30 also with the 5411. If you viewed your boat from the outer hull, the only sea water strainer that it comes with is an ol' school bronze slotted cup type strainer built into the exterior of the raw sea water intake thru-hull assembly. This has been adequate on every raw water cooled engine I've ever had. The extra strainer u want to instal is really unecessary. It may actually create a clog if the filter element gets full of crud, and or grows bacteria inside the cup. Secondary filtering is only necessary for diesel fuel, as any debris can block your fuel injector nozzle, etc.
The impeller & water pump are suprisingly tough & durable & will chew up small particles. It is more likely to get clogged on the outside of the hull, if at all. The strainer on the hull does need to be cleaned out periodically, during a haul out, etc.
I would return your filter & plumb the boat as it originally came. Remember the KISS motto: Keep It Simple! & there's less to go wrong.
