Hi

I have a 2000 460 and am trying to drop the rudder (composite shaft) to inspect and clean the bearings. Unfortunately due to corrosion it is probably going to be impossible to remove the quadrant arm without causing damage to it, rather than the fibre glass of the rudder stock. (Whose idea was it to use stainless bolts in aluminium with no corrosion protection!!!)

If I do have to destroy it in removal does anyone know of a supplier for a new one.

Also if I decide to replace the rudder with a new Foss Foam one does anyone know what is involved and the best suppliers for replacing the bearings which presumably will be totally different form those on the composite shaft.

One other observation. There is a white spacer at the top of the rudder tube that seems to support the quadrant and presumably the weight of the rudder. This does not seem to have been cut square and the eight therefore only bears on one side of it - is this normal?

I have tried the search engine but maybe its me I didn't get much joy.

You might try contacting Marlow Hunter.

Is the rudder presenting problems?

Hi

Yes the rudder is very stiff and I would like to drop it to check the bearings - there is no discernible side to side freeplay thankfully

Jimali that link is broken. Your upload might not have succeeded. I'd really like to know what Hunter said. Please retry the upload.

Just a thought. Make sure the friction knob is completely free. I'm sure you already checked that but just in case...

Yes - thanks for the thought - I did think of that and actually disconnected the draglink at the rudder stock to take out the effect of the autopilot and wheel etc. and then tried to turn the rudder with the emergency tiller - two hernias later.........

The wheel brake is a whole other issue to be dealt with as it does nothing! I use a bit of rope to tie the wheel when I leave the boat.

I have to say most of the boat is well put together but some parts of the design...we have a saying over here: Heath-Robinson

I got a new one from foss foam. They delivered it to gree cove springs for me. They supplies a new lower bearing for me which was the stiffness culprit. I had to take it to a machinist to cut it down a few thou but worked out very well ,the bearing I mean. The top one was okay so used it again
