Woody, I agree about what it looks like and the drag it costs, you can only imagine what it was like with an 18" long rubber pipe on it! How much work is required to replace the thru hull? It is in a fairly easy place to work on (or as easy as it gets on a boat) but I have never even contemplated replacing something like this. A sea c*ck that it threaded on makes sense but isn't this bonded to the hull?

you may be able to take a hacksaw and cut it off about an inch away from the hull and that be it and leave the old fitting in as is ..as far as installing a new fitting goes it will not be easy as it is in the very back of the boat and access will be very limited and hard to work in there ...not knowing the interior of your boat...and if you go the hacksaw path make sure you file all the rough edges off the cut

On a side note. While you are working on the exaughst system check and tighten all your hose clamps on the exaughst system

Gould it be there to keep you from speeding. The angle looks like it could help slow you down.

Ken, now that you mention it we have seen our fastest speeds on starboard tack! Seriously though I am happy to have removed the rubber pipe but still a little obsessed about this stupid metal pipe and elbow so I will certainly cut it off somehow before she gets splashed in the spring. I have thought about replacing the whole assembly but have no idea how difficult it would be to remove and replace from the hull.
We haven't set any speed records yet but passed a few boats seeing 6.2 knots reasonably continuously one day.

looks like it is simply bolted on. Remove the screws and epoxy the holes left there. We had another boat in our marina that simply shoved a hose into the outlet. Perhaps that 90degree elbow is simply pressed in?
