I am looking to install a vertical windlass with capstan on my 1989 39. I would like to extend the anchor/roller out a bit to avoid guarding the bow every time we haul. I was thinking an anchor roller set inside the aluminum stem plate anchor roller that could be pushed out to extend the clearence once the bottom has broke loose. One could pull it back in for sailing.

Any thoughts?

hello..... i have a 36-2 with the same setup. i have been considering having on fabricated to fit the existing one to extend a bit further. figured two plates could be made and just bolt the on with a roller on the end. love to hear opinions

I'm sure you wouldn't have asked the question if you weren't having a problem with the anchor hitting the bow, but I'm surprised. I've got a 1986 39-2 and don't have a similar problem.

Right now I'm carrying a Danforth but want to switch out to a bruce. We're going to need more room.

ablegen - What are you using for an anchor? I just bought an 1987 39-2 with a Bruce stuck in the anchor locker. Not sure how they got it in there, because it is pretty tight. I plan on leaving it on the existing roller when I start cruising in the spring because I think an anchor should be ready on short notice. Do you know of any problems with a Bruce hitting the bow like described for the Danforth?

I've got a 45 lb CQR that hang well on the bow roller. I take it off the roller when moored in a real blow so the mooring line doesn't catch, but other than that no problems.

It isn't so much that the anchor won't fit in that short bow roller, it's the fact that it smacks the bow when being hauled in by hand. I don't want to imagine what it might do on a good windless and I'm getting tired of bungie strapping that throw cushion on the bow every time. So, a sliding bow roller placed inside the cast one could give another 8" or so keeping the anchor away from the bow. If it works we can slide it back keeping the anchor close to the stem & I can stop strapping the cushion up front and having to explain why.

Seams like alot of work for a cushion & a few gell coat chips but what the hell. I am definately open to any other ideas.
