I chose a mixed plan for the refit of my Cal 35 Cruiser standing rigging. Swaged fittings at the top of the mast and Hi-Mod fittings at the deck level
The primary weakness of swage fittings occurs at the bottom of the stay. The swage if not perfect is facing up and acts as a cup to capture water flowing down the stay. The moisture has no way to escape the swage and overtime erodes the cable holding up the mast. We see the first signs of this erosion as single strands breaking at or near the swage. Forming what sailors call meat hooks that leave a mark on a crew who ventures too close to the shroud moving about the boat. By the time these appear the mast standing rigging is seriously compromised.
The swage-less fittings are primarily made by three companies. They are known by names - Hi-Mod, Norseman, and Stay-Lok. This article in the 2015 Practical Sailor gives a good overview of swage-less fittings.
Since 1974, Practical Sailor’s independent testing has taken the guesswork out of boat and gear buying.
