310 Headroom

I thought the 310 was my boat. However looking at one this past weekend, it appears that the 310 has less stand up headroom in the cabin then my old 30. I'm only 5'10 and I was kind of close to touching. I think the specs say it's 6'2 headroom, I'm not so sure. Maybe I'm getting taller.

Hi Gary: I'm not surprised that the 30 has more headroom.......the doghouse is so much higher than the newer designs....I find that it greatly reduces visibility. It's a compromise....between headroom and visiblity at the wheel. Happy sailing!!

Terminology

The dog house is the cabin on deck where the navigational equipment is. The coach roof, or trunk, is the portion of the cabin roof raised above deck level to provide headroom in the cabin.

Headroom change

It may have occurred when the C310 started being built in Florida, but the headroom on a later boat than ours was reduced. This was confirmed by tape measure.We have Hull #40 which has a little over an inch more headroom that a boat I looked at with a serial number in the nineties. Ours is closer to the 6' 2".I'm not sure what was actually changed, but I suspect the sole sits higher in the later boat.

Depends where you stand

I have 310 hull number 118 and the top of my head (I am 6' 1") says that there is 6'2" on both sides of the bulkhead, at the bottom of the companionway steps, and in the head. In between where the companionway hatch slides it is probably about 2" less. Ouch is what that means. I moved to the 310 from a Catalina 22 so I still think there is plenty of head room. The Admiral is 5'1" and has plenty of room everywhere. But, even more important to the Admiral is the fact that the V-berth is huge and has a real innerspring mattress. We love the boat.

Interior Space

does anyone thing the 310 has more interior space that the c30?

Yes and No

The 310 has more interior volume due to 8" more beam and the extra length. However the salon in the 310 is much smaller because the V-berth is much larger. The aft berths are roughly the same.
