Exactly the kind of conditions that might make one complacent about hooking in?

Where is the report that none of the crew were tethered? Lots of people making lots of assumptions.

Los Coronados Islands

We went by there about 1100 and the seas were running a pretty good swell near the islands. With the Spot path, it sure looks like the AP was following to a waypoint and the waypoint was the north island. When I passed through the debris field, it was by the south island to where it may have drifted with the southernly current.
I have had two friends hit cans that they were using as waypoints; one got frisky with his wife and another was in dense fog. I learned my lesson and never set the waypoint near something solid.
BTW, I once found both watch asleep on the return from Ensenada, so it does happen. Fortunately, I only sleep 30-40 minutes at a time, so I do check on them.
In cruising classes, you can motor between 2000 and 0800 in half-hour minimum intervals with a significant penalty applied. In our case, the break-even is about one knot. We didn't motor and it took 42+ hours to finish in pretty light air the whole race. We took a second.
RIP Aegean.

Re: 3 dead, 1 missing in accident during Newport-Ensenada ra

the problem with a spot is the search is gonna be exactly on the money line where the debris is NOT going to be. they also need to search to 100 ft/yds either side of the track--i hope they are so doing. would help everyone's minds to find the cause of the disaster.

complacency comes with repetition of routes and with calm waters--which can suddenly without a prediction become un-calm, and being male and going to go pee off the rail because ye have to do that which you were taught men do--stand at rail to pee instead of sit on a stool . go figger. so ye get found with pants at ankles -- not a safe place for em, is it, and you are in the water. i got more.....

For the sake of the family, I hope it is the skipper's.

Re: 3 dead, 1 missing in accident during Newport-Ensenada ra

when were they gonna change their waypoint to make for ensenada--did they FORGET the islands have been there since before the first ever newport to ensenada boat race, and that they are incredibly visible in daylight......

unless there have been any unadvertised missing souls, should be his body. is a sad thing to have gotten into thar mess he got into--is so very easy to avoid those big islands. sad thing.

REGION: Body found near Coronado Islands week after yacht wreck

REGION ---- A body was found near the Coronado Islands, but there was no immediate word Monday if it is that of the skipper of a yacht that broke apart during a race late last month, killing three others.

A fisherman found a man's body about 2:30 p.m. Sunday near the Coronado Islands and the body was handed over to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Officials would not say if the body is believed to be that of Theo Mavromatis.

Mavromatis, 49, of Redondo Beach, and three other men were taking part in an annual Newport-to-Ensenada race when their 37-foot boat dropped off the event's vessel-tracking system about 1:30 a.m. April 28, according to the Newport Ocean Sailing Association, which stages the competition.

Searchers later that day found the bodies of William R. Johnson Jr., 57, of Torrance, Kevin Rudolph, 53, of Manhattan Beach, and Joseph L. Stewart, 64, of Bradenton, Fla.

Autopsies determined that Johnson and Rudolph died of blunt-force trauma and that Stewart drowned, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its effort to find Mavromatis on April 29.

A floating debris field suggested that Mavromatis' Hunter 376, the Aegean, may have collided with a larger vessel. The accident occurred just south of the U.S.-Mexico border, about eight miles off the Baja California coast.

The fatalities were the first in the 65-year history of the annual Newport-to-Ensenada race.

4th Casualty From Aegean Found and Identified

The final crew of the Aegean was found and identified as the skipper / owner Theo Mavromatis. He died of blunt force trauma as did two others. The final casualty died of drowning contributed to by blunt force trauma according to news reports.

To my mind, despite the Spot track, this is again sounding more like a collision with shipping than hitting the island. I imagine we'll see in a few weeks what the CG determines.

RIP Aegean.
