2YM15 Waterlift Muffler Replacement

I knew there was an exhaust leak somewhere in the system - and the problem presented itself while digging around under the muffler for the engine thru hull last evening. The exhaust hose is nearly completely separated at the "goes-out" port on the muffler. I'm somehow amazed we haven't flooded the boat. In any case, obviously we'll replace that hose as it also has some noticeable rust spots where the wire reinforcement is failing.

The muffler itself is also in pretty crummy shape, not mounted to anything, and in the way of the engine thru hull. I'd considered moving the thru hull, but now I wonder if I could replace the muffler and relocate it out of the way. Not sure what it originally looked like under the port lazarette - but there's a shelf there now holding the 2 batteries. Those are getting replaced shortly, so I'm not opposed to moving/rebuilding their home.

Has anyone done this in a 28' O'Day with a Yanmar 2YM15 - or similar boat/engine? The mixing elbow is on the port side.

Thanks Much!

Chris

My boat has a Vetus waterlift muffler that bolts to the side of the engine compartment . I noticed in your pictures you had a canister type so it was probably changed out. My guess is O'Day would have used the Vetus on other models as they seemed to standardize on a lot of hardware. Here's a shot of the vetus, it has screw holes molded in front and back. http://www.go2marine.com/product/77530F/vetus-lp-waterlocks.html

Now URGENT! You can die from carbon monoxide if you run your engine and it is leaking. Water in the boat is the least of your problems. Do not run your engine until you fix that hose leak. CO is so deadly you don't even know you are dying, it effects your ability to think so you just drift off and die.

And if you don't die you might just end up w/ permanent brain damage. No telling though.

The boat's out of service until we get a few other things corrected as well. But thanks for your concern.

With the Vetus models.... I've heard some concern over the plastic melting. Now I know the water/exhaust should not be hot enough to do that kind of damage. And I'll install flow and temp gauges that I don't have now. Other thoughts?

Thanks!
