Big job

You're better off using block ice. I have a 29.5 and blocks actually do a better job than some of the lame refrigerator systems out there. And I encounter no electrical problems.

Bill, one of those systems comes to mind.

I forget the name of the electrical principal it uses to move heat, but it's lame. That said, I know nothing of the 28.5 icebox. John, get a book. This is a complex subject. You have to answer a lot of questions. They are mainly about your boat use and lifestyle. We could write all day. You have to even do testing of your current ice box to determine BTU loss. Urrrrmmmmph! Sorry, I just shuddered from recalling what it was like to start learning about refrigeration. :)

Unless you live aboard.....

John, Unless you live aboard, John, which I doubt on a 285 - you're better off with a block of ice. Block ice works great in my 285 and I've never seen the need of going to the trouble and the $$$ of installing refrigeration. If you have only two batteries on board you might need a third and if you have one one....well, I'd spend the $$$ for a second battery and a good re-charger. But I know how these things can be. You get something in your head that you really think you need (I do it too!) and you got to have it. In that case I'd go out and buy one of those carry all type cooler/refrigerators that work off of a 12v battery lighter plug-in. Use that for the stuff you really want to keep really cool all the time and then at least you can load it up at home and cool the stuff while driving to the boat. A tip for using ice: We bought a small cooler and load it up on a summer day for bottled water, sodas and drink ice. That way we don't have to open the ice box up for just a couple of cubes.
