Unless you live aboard.....
John,Unless you live aboard, John, which I doubt on a 285 - you're better off with a block of ice. Block ice works great in my 285 and I've never seen the need of going to the trouble and the $$$ of installing refrigeration. If you have only two batteries on board you might need a third and if you have one one....well, I'd spend the $$$ for a second battery and a good re-charger. But I know how these things can be. You get something in your head that you really think you need (I do it too!) and you got to have it. In that case I'd go out and buy one of those carry all type cooler/refrigerators that work off of a 12v battery lighter plug-in. Use that for the stuff you really want to keep really cool all the time and then at least you can load it up at home and cool the stuff while driving to the boat. A tip for using ice: We bought a small cooler and load it up on a summer day for bottled water, sodas and drink ice. That way we don't have to open the ice box up for just a couple of cubes.
