I've been looking at Catalina 270s, about 1995 vintage seems to fit my pocketbook yet not be too abused/old to be beyond my meager maintenance skills. But looking over some adverts I see that a 1992 or 1993 Catalina 28 is about the same price. Next weekend (a week from today) I hope to see a 28 in person. Until then I have only seen the pix on Catalina's web site so I'm kinda clueless on how much different they are from a 270. Can anyone give me a comparison, which you would pick, and why? Relative space, performance, comfort, handling? Thanks.

get a 28

I seriously considered both boats when we boought our 28 in 94. The v berth is almost no existant in the 270. For that reason alone I'd go for a 28 The galley is on the port and head to starboard on the 270. Oposite on 28. The aft cabin is smaller and the overall boat is much littler. the beam on a 28 is almost a foot wider and it is a ton heavier. We are thrilled with our 28. We bought her new over 6 years ago and still love her

Is trailering important to you

My husband and I did the same research and decided the 270 was better if your looking for a big boat that is trailerable. That was the main difference for us. If you want a trailerable boat the 27' is the best out there. If the boat is never going to be moved, then the 28' would work. Depends on your use.
