Happy Holidays Everyone. This goes out to the 270 owners. My wife and I are looking for a 270. Can anyone tell me the changes made in the boat from 1993 to say, 2003. This may help me focus in on a specific year or group of years depending on the changes made. Also I'd like to hear about the likes and dislikes from 270 owners. I'm sure there are things that you don't like about the boat and would change if you could, but these are the things I would like to hear about. If not dislikes, then peculiarities about the boat. Both positive and areas of opportunity comments would be most helpful. No boat is perfect, and often the dislike comments are just as useful/informative as the likes. Thanks for your comments.

Catalina 270 255 Wabamun. Welcome to the marina
We have hull 255, and there are two things that I would offer; first, the cover for the steering cables in the aft berth is in the way when sleeping. Second, the boat has this nasty habit of sailing itself. Once trimmed "properly" you can walk away from the helm, if the wind shifts, the boat will fall off or come up accordingly. I say "nasty" because it instills a very false sense of security.
Oh, and the doorway into the back berth is a little cramped, compared to the wide open space in the 28mkii.
That's just my 2 cents. It's a great boat. I'm very glad I have one.
(Now, how do I talk the admiral into that nice 315?)

Cheers
Gary

1. I find the door to the aft cabin tight but it is not a show stopper for me.
2. The cabin table inhibits access to the bow. A lot of people remove the table but I am planning to modify the table to have a drop leaf.
3. The only difference between years I know off is different engines, Perkins, Westerbeke, Yanmar.
4. What was optional in the early years, such as a propane stove, teak floor, became standard later on.
5. A boat rigged for a cruising spinnaker is a lot more fun when going down wind.

I had a '94 #96 and sailed a friends boat which I believe was an '06 (one of the last boats).
The '94 was a 270 LE which denoted it had those items which were "optional" on the early models. I can't remember what things were optional, maybe stern perch seats, water heater or stove ? Had the Perkins with hurth trans (in reverse under sail) 2 blade prop. I ran a 155 genny most of the time on the Hood furler.
The new boat had a Yanmar (neutral under sail) 3 blade prop with 110 on a Schaeffer (sp?) furler. Also had the bent pedestal guard and the wheel brake on the wheel hub.
The two blade locked prop was a little faster under sail, I preferred the Schaeffer furler on later boats, Perkins might be a tad noisier. It's really a headsail driven rig and I'd suggest at least a 135.

The 135 is a little small. Adding a couple of inches to the 155 (the grey mylar one) from FX turns the front end into a real powerhouse. Mine's an LE, the water heater is coming out, it consumes much too much space in the lazarette, and we've got a new smaller table under construction. The factory table is WAY too big, it more than limits access to the bow area, and is a bear to get into the storage space up front. A double drop leaf about 1/2 the size of the factory offering is probably just about right.
