27' Catalina with odor a good deal?

I have a line on a 1986 catalina 27 that the owner says has an odor that will knock you over on a hot day. Assuming I nogotiate a good price, and all else is in great shape what are the chances of correcting the odor problem? The source of the smell is unknown: deisel bildge, mildew, head, bildge??. Can the entire interior be easily removed (by a novice) and scrubbed - what would be the procedure? This would be my first larger sailboat.

Mark; I'd almost bet the farm that the odor is in the head hoses, especiallly if they're of the black kind. There may be a holding tank/MSD leak into the bilge, too. That's all easy to fix.
