a sailing friend of mine has a catalina 27 with an obvious bend in the boom, probably 2-3", with the curve such that it would hold water. Is this normal, any comments. Thanks.

Someone sat on the boom hanging on pig tail

It sounds like someone sat on the boom when it was hanging on the pig tail / topping lift.

Where's the sheeting?

I understand ther are different types of booms. One is built for sheeting via a traveler over the cabin enclosure, and this of course would have the sheet attached--say mid boom or so. The other boom type has sheeting at the end of the boom. A boom built for end boom sheeting may not be strong enough to take sheeting at its mid-point, thus the curve. I have no other specs to determine each type of boom strength.

Depends

Depends upon a number of factors. Is it bent in a critical spot like where the vang attaches? Does it affect Mainsail shape? Is it only bent vertically? What is the general condition of the boom, i.e., does it need replacement anyway because the metal has corroded? bob
