So keeping our 1979 Cherubini in East Hampton this summer and the sun has been strong. I researched Bimini tops and way to expensive for this boat and then boom tents. I found a great site online asking $150 for boom tents but there is a 5-10 day lead time.

Well I found a cheap solution!

First: Painters tarp (canvas from Home depot) http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-5-3-4-ft-x-8-3-4-ft-Canvas-Drop-Cloth-69CV8/202029402

Second: Clips like a long key ring that I threaded onto the seamed edges

Third: String but more on the rope side

Fourth: Throw over boom and tie to toe rail

Done. Shade and comfort.

Cool beans... and I noticed they have an 8 3/4 ft by 11ft tarp for $21.98.

Also, to step it up a bit, create a pole sleeve at each end (fore and aft) by folding over the material a couple of inches and sewing it. Then insert one of these shock-corded fiberglass tent poles into each sleeve. ($23 for 3)

These would be easy to store below and easy to re-assemble.
Add a reinforced loop near the middle to accommodate the main halyard and you can elevate it as desired/needed.

Nice! You might substitute grommets for the clips. They are pretty easy to install but probably should order stainless. Does increase the cost though.
