We are planning on adding shore power to our '93 23.5. For those of you who have shore power, where are your power inlet and the breaker panel. Also, any suggestions for the placement of AC outlets in the cabin? Thanks in advance, Rob "Kinship"

Mee too

Rob, I am also planning to install shore power in my 1994 23.5. I have been giving it some thought as well as discussing it with Rick Webb on this forum. I plan to install my shore power inlet on the port outboard side of the boat just forward of the coaming box/teak step. A number various boats have them in this location. I have spoken with Hunter and there is very little foam, if any, inside the rail forward of the teak step which will make routing wire tot he panel a breeze. I plan to install my breaker panel above the sink on that flat surface that faces forward above the sink (if you can visualize what I am describing) to starboard as far as I can to get the depth behind the panel that would be required. That location would put the breaker panel within one foot of the shore power inlet. I plan to put an outlet under the alcohol stove facing aft. Another one AAALLLL the way forward in the V-Berth to run my air conditioner and maybe another on on the starboard side under the settee near the bulkhead that is just aft of the portapotty. Hope this helps. Jonathan Costello

One more thing

I bought "Sailboat Electrics Simplified" by Don Casey to help me determine the proper way to install the shore power. It is an excellent resouce to make sure it is done right. He does an excellent job of explaining the concepts of electricity and DC and AC current, etc. Highly recommended.

Once Again

I have the same thoughts of adding shore power every year. I usually shelve the idea since I haven't figured out what to do with grounding and zincs (placement, mounting, etc). Since my energy needs are fairly small I went with a solar charger a couple of years ago. I'm interested in how your shore power refit turns out.

Attach Them to the Centerboard Bracket

Someday I'll do mine like that too.

Inverter

I have two 12V batteries, bridge, with a 750watt inverter. Watch movies on the laptop and send / receive e-mail when I call in sick during the week to go sailing. Also, have a Verizon internet card in the laptop so I am always online! This is the same set-up as on my 22' Mako. I can be trolling or bottom bumping for snapper 30 miles out and still pretend to be a responsible grown up to my staff. LOL!!! One battery comes out of the sailboat when I want to race / go fast / light wind. If you are not powering up an AC / Furnace or Fridge, an extension cord from the dock will be a lot better and you can skip this one altogether and work on another project. It is only a 23' boat, there is nothing in it that requires a hard electricity source. I think..

Jonathan, I put the deck fill for a fresh water tank just forward of the port side coming box, and as I recall, I had to carve out quite a bit of foam. But the water hose is quite a bit bigger than an electric cable. Also, I have a compass mounted, I think, where you are panning to put your panel, but on the outside. As I recall, the compass is only a few inches deep, but still extends an inch or so inside the cabin above the sink. I don't think there is enough depth in that bulk head to place a breaker panel. I was thinking of placing the panel on the aft face of the starboard settee, but was concerned about someone sleeping in the aft berth bumping and shutting off the breakers. I have also seen other 23.5s with the inlet all the way aft on the transom, next to the motor well. I toyed for a short while about putting the inlet on the inside of the starboard combing box, but was afraid of taking to much space there. The box is barely big enough to hold a winch handle as it is. Grounding is an issue. I have gone the route of hooking a shore power cord up to a power strip just to run a battery charger for a few hours and charging the laptop. But to be honest, that scares the heck out of me, knowing that there is the potential to complete a ground between the water and the shore power. Not something I want to mess with. Keep me posted on your progress. I will do likewise. Rob, "Kinship"

AC power

I put in AC power when I installed a mermaid aircondition on my 23.5. Below is the link. I put the inlet on the starboard aft side, below the nav light. Immediately on the inside I connected a galvanic isolator. I push a blue conduit (just like the one the dc wires run through) through the foam forward to the current location of the DC panel. Then pushed the wires through. The panel is definitely a tight fit.
