Where do you put the pole that holds up the mast after you raise it? Is there a good place for it inside the boat where it fits well? It seems awfully long.

Mast Pole

Mine fits nicely next to cushions in the aft berth. I lie to next to the bulkhead between the cushion. Can not see it or feel it if sleeping.

Mast crutch...

I don't ever remove the mast crutch from its place in the sockets on the transom. It serves two purposes (in addition to supporting the mast during trailering): I mounted the bracket which holds my horseshoe buoy on the fore side of the pole; in port, I slide an extension pole into the top of tube on which I mount a TV antenna. I know another H-23.5 owner who mounts a camcorder on the top of the mast crutch and tapes his sailing adventures (which provides him with sailing memories during the long winter months). It may look a little strange sticking up like a sore thumb while sailing, but it serves some very practical functions. Dale Wile s/v Grandechild Sandpoint, Idaho

Mast crutch can be shortened

I had to shorten my mast crutch in order to be able to park the trailered boat under a stilt home. If you plan it right, you can cut off just enough so the spreaders just touch the deck without putting any pressure on them. A nice little aside to this is that the crutch now fits in the storage area by the aft berths. This has not affected my abitity to raise the mast either.

confused

You leave the crutch in the gudgeons when you sail? Doesn't your rudder need to go there?

Mast crutsh

I as well leave the mast crutch ( the one in the back of the boat ) up while I'm sailing. I have also found it quite handy for a number of things. 1. to hang a throwable cushion, when sailing 2. to tie by bimini top to when we go home. 3. for people to use as a "hand hold" when thay come onboard. I leave mine in its holder . . .or

Place it in the storage area in the aft berth.

Unconfused

For Mike...the mast support crutch does not go in the gudgeons, but in sockets attached to the transom specifically to hold the crutch pole. These are mounted slightly away from the gudgeons, and do not interfere with operation of the rudder or tiller.

In the back of the pickup.

Frank, after reading Phil's comment about this web site last weekend I learned that we should post questions of this nature under the small boat forum. I know I've been very guilty of using this forum for these types of questions in the past. I'm kidding about the my response to your question. I usually give the pole to the dog and let the grandkids try to find it when it's time to go home. Enjoy, Ray
