I looked at a boat Sunday for purchase consideration and thought I covered everything but: I'm trying to remember thru hull valves. I saw a diagram from someone else that showed 'head and macerator pump' valves to the right of the engine looking aft. On the boat I looked at I remember two large black hoses at that location that went into a raised fiberglass square area, but I didn't see any valves. Can someone explain what I was looking at. Should I have seen valves there? I'm interested in this boat. I'm moving up from a trailerable Cat 22. Is it normal to always have a little water in the bilge with a docked boat?

Sounds like the water lift exhaust system.
Bilge pumps can't remove the last inch or so, but the bilge should be clean, not rust colored.
Regular prop shaft packing leaks very slightly for cooling when running. Key to me is how often the bilge pump is tripped, if more than once a week it's probably leaking too much.
I wouldn't say "normal" but would say "common". That water could be anything from a leaky through-hull to leftover water from an overfilled fresh water tank. I would see if the owner has identified the source since it could be a very simple fix...but on the other hand...stevestk said:
My '79 constantly had water in the bilge from te packing and leaky ports and hatches. But it was never anything serious. My 2000 310 has been completely dry since the day I bought her to the point where I have to clear cobwebs once in a while. So common, yes...normal, depends on your definition!
I would just make sure the source is found before you jump into it.
