Hey Guys,
The grey non skid on my 40.5 is wearing through. Is this paint or gelcoat? whatever Hunter used, it looks like it was brushed on as I can see brush marks as I sadly watch wear away over the years. Has anyone re coated there decks to look like the factory and what did you use?

Any help would be great
Thanks
Frank

I feel your pain. My 1997 h40.5 has the same problem- see picture below. I don't really know if it is paint or gelcoat, but I would bet on gelcoat. I don't know what to do about it so I have done nothing. The picture has a couple of spots, but I have more on both sides. I suspect that if we got some matching gelcoat, it could be touched up. What I really don't know is if the repair would look worst than the present condition.

I painted my "grey" non-skid three years ago and it looks great in the Florida sunshine. I get a lot of "Looks Good" comments from dock walkers.

Painted it with what paint?
Was it rolled, sprayed or brushed?

Interlux Interdeck. It does not hide original diamond pattern. You can add a little grit or not. Comes in different colors.

My 94 Precision 28 also has a light grey non skid that has deteriated in some spots. I think the odds of matching a gelcoat color and blending it in to the surrounding area are very slim. It’s one of those things you either live with or completely paint or gelcoat.

On my previous boat the cockpit floor area had some gelcoat damage. I repaired it and used a product on the non skid called Kiwi non skid. I really liked the result. Follow the directions and it goes on easily and is durable.

What paint did you use and how did you apply it? I'd love to see photos as we have a similar issue.

OK Guys, I didn't paint it myself so...
I'll call the yard tomorrow and get the specs on the paint. I didn't try to color match but I do know it was rolled on.
As to pics...
Weather here has been the pits but should be good Thursday and I'll take a couple of pics with my tablet.

I contacted Hunter and they said it is gelcoat but they don't have any other details. I think I will try it in the next few weeks

I would be careful with Interlux Interdeck...I used this often on my cape dory sailboats....while it looks very nice when finished, it does wear thin after 2-3 yrs and is not as hard as I wanted it to be...it has abrasive right in the paint and is easy to apply but I would be careful on doing the decks with this product on an expensive boat....jmo...I probably when thru 3-5 gallons over the yrs....With the Interdeck you will have an abrasive finish that is different from the original finish I have on my 35.5 legend...

I am looking at painting my Hunter 376 (1998) non-slip with Interlux Kingston Gray.
Was told that is the closest match to the original paint on the 1990 -1999 Hunters.
My non-slip grey coat is fading and discolored because we used some VIM on the deck. We hosed it off several times but it was too late and the VIM stained the grey surface.

What is VIM?

Hunter 42 currently in New Zealand
I had to tear up the bow area of the deck on my 1991 Passage 42 (to tear out some rotten core due to leaking at an entry point for the jib furler control lines--a problem for all of the early Passage 42 models due to a bad design). The new decking was just marine plywood which the yard guy covered with epoxy. (This was in New Zealand, and similar cored deck materials were just not available there). He used Kiwigrip non-skid deck paint on the smooth surface and it looks and functions perfectly. It provides a better surface than my old original non-skid, and it's now going on six years. The color is a bit darker of a grey than the original, and it's noticeable (if that's important to you). When "I get around to it . . . ." I plan to paint over and rehabilitate the entire worn out non-skid on the rest of my boat.

The yard guy called in today and told me he used Awlgrip 2000 Top Coat with Griptex additive on my non-skid.
