My new to me Ericson 28 has the stinkies. I plan to rip all of the sanitation hoses (including the vent hose) out and replace them with Trident 101 and to simplify the system. No need for overboard, "y" valves ect...
I haven't been able to decide whether the holding tank stinks too or whether the stink has "stuck" to the outside and can be scrubbed off. I haven't pulled the tank and hope not to if I don't need to. So...
Can a PE tank BE permeable?

Thanks all.

No, the HDPE plastic tanks are not permeable AFAIK. Wiping it down with bleach should fix it... The problem is the hoses. One easy way to confirm this is to take a rag or washcloth that has been soaked with very hot water and place it against the hose. Pull it away after a few minutes and sniff it. If it smells like sewage, then the hoses are permeated.

Any flexible hose will permeate eventually. If you can reduce the surface aera, it will permeate less. I use ABS pipes for longer runs and use couplings to Trident101 rubber hose to provide flexibility. ABS will never permeate even it is imersed in that stuff forever.

ABS can be bent with heat gun. Just don't brun it on one spot.

Nope...PE tanks don't permeate

However, unless you put plugs in the fittings of tank you've removed, odor from inside the tank can escape...something that has misled more than one person into believing the tank had permeated. A poster here a year or so ago had pulled his tank out and put in his garage...nothing could convince him that the odor in the garage wasn't due to a permeated tank.

But it's very possible that odor from your permeated hoses, from the "primordial soup" than can live in bilges etc has attached itself to the outside of the tank..and to every surface the hoses pass through.

So once you've gotten everything out, buy some PureAyre PureAyre ... Thoroughly clean your bilges and every area the hoses have passed through with detergent and water...let it all get dry....then put the PureAyre in a pump garden spray jug (MUCH easier to use than a trigger sprayer..the Roundup brand ones at Walmart cost about $15, but are really good quality) and "hose down" every surface, nook and cranny AND the outside of the tank. Don't rinse....just let it dry. And if you're in a mood to get rid of most of your closed-up-all-winter odors too, spray all your life jackets, foulies, cushions and other soft goods and put 'em all out in the sun to dry all day.

Now you're ready to re-install your system. Use Trident #148 for your head intake line and vent line if it's smaller than 1".

It's not necessarily true that all flexible hoses eventually permeate.... That used to be true, and most still do, but not all. Trident 101/102 have been on the market for more than 15 years without a single reported odor permeation failure...and Shields has just introduced a new hose--their Poly X--that they put a lifetime warranty on--and for their price/ft, it better last that long!

Btw, dog...water and holding tanks are all LDPE, not HD.

Thanks everyone

And thanks Peggy for your usual lengthy and detailed response.
With thanks to Ericson for making everything accessible and serviceable it doesn't seem like a big deal to pull the tank anyway. Its coming out and home where I can thoroughly clean it and close off the fittings that won't be used again. I can also clean where it sits and better access where the hoses exit the compartment.
The PureAyre looks great and I could use it (and need to) everywhere, not just where the hoses were. Thankfully the hose routs are short and easily accessed too.
Regarding PureAyre where would you suggest buying it? Are the different types, IE for dogs, for pets, for home, all really the same? The home version looks to be more expensive than the dog version. Looks like I have to buy it on line?
Thanks again,
Rob

Get the Home version

It's a bit more concentrated than the doggie version.

The sbo.com online store has it in trigger spray size bottles, but last time I checked, they weren't price competitive for gallons. Check with Dave to see if that situation has improved...if it hasn't, order it directly from PureAyre.

Hey all, I just saw this conversation and I want to offer all of you a discount on PureAyre Marine Formula. You are right that it is much stronger than PureAyre Home and Pet versions. It contains at least 20% more enzymes. I run ThePureAyreStore.com and want to offer all Peggie Hall fans a 20% discount! Just order at www.ThePureAyreStore.com at the regular price and state "I'm a fan of Peggie Hall!" in the comment line to get your rebate. Total cost to you will be $55.96 per gallon and remember, shipping is always free! - Rico@ThePureAyreStore.com

Oh my goodness - yuch, yuch, YUCH!!!

Guess what I did on Sunday? My nose hairs are all gone, my lungs are permanently polluted and the EPA is searching for who ever caused the green cloud of toxic gas over eastern CT. Yup..I removed all of the old hoses, Gusher overboard pump and holding tank. Go figure, the tank wasn't pumped out nearly as far as it could have been and not rinsed. I did the initial cleaning of the area it was removed from with Citrus Boat Wash and let it sit. I couldn't rinse anyway 'cause the marina water isn't on yet. Hell of a tiring and stinky job. Mucch more scrubbing to come. I did buy a gallon of PureAyre and am gonna need it.
Well after getting the tank home (that's another thread all together) is emptied the disgusting contents into a bucket and accessed the situation. What a mess. I don't think permeable is the issue here. This tank stinks so badly with so much build up I'm thinking there is no hope. It would take gallons of wash water (from my power washer maybe) and I think it would still stink. What would I do with that wash water anyway? 50' down wind from this bomb is unbearable. Reminds me of Jim Carey..."wheeeeew, do NOT go in there!"

I'm checking out Plastic-Mart now. Anybody buy from them?

Rob (still in recovery).
