I have the original transducer - which is datamarine. Looking to upgrade the existing depth and speed displays (also datamarine). I can't seem to find an adapter that would work for the newer speed and depth displays that will connect with the original transducer- which is a through hull style. Any thoughts on this? Should I just upgrade the transducer? If so- how daunting is this task..? Thanks for all your thoughts!

Your message is confusing (at least to me). Not sure if you are asking how to upgrade the transducer to the existing Datamarine readout head, or do you want to upgrade the whole system to another manufacturer or to Datamarine?
If you have a bad transducer and want to get another one, then contact Datamarine and they should be able to send you one. If your Datamar electronics are very old and you want to upgrade to what they have now, then go ahead and buy the whole new system. Be more specific and maybe I can be of more help.

Sorry - it's not a through hull. The transducer is IN the hull - a datamarine SX-120. My current displays in the cockpit are so hard to read, I'm just looking to replace them with something more current and more easily read, especially in sunlight. When looking at DMI marine - (I believe they bought out Datamarine sometime in the 1990's) they have a Phoenix depth and speed. However they're pretty expensive. When looking closer at the connection, it doesn't look like it would be a match. Mine look like almost a coax type connection. Just wondering what some of you may have done (or would do) in my situation is all. I'm not opposed to the idea of ripping out the old transducer and replacing it with an old one either. And if that's the case.. what is involved with removing it. Because if I WERE to go the more expensive route and get say a Garmin 12" Chartplotter, I'm sure I'd have to get the matching NMEA transducer. Thanks for your thoughts.

I recently read an article or ad for replacing the display without replacing the transducer. It may have been in Good Old Boat and B & G was the company. The adapter that came with it changed the data to NMEA 2000. If I had the cash, this is the way I would go. If I find more specifics I'll post them.
