We have a 1985 Pearson Triton 25 and are installing a new engine w electric start and tilt. Trying to figure out if we need to replace the motor bracket as we are going from 6hp to 9.9 and heavier engine. Can't find any make or model on the bracket. Contacted Garelick since it looks like theirs, but they said no! Any advice on figuring out what we have or purchasing a new one that will work on a slopes transom?

Pearson Triton was previously called the US 25 and before that it was the Bayliner Buccaneer. Most of them used the same motor mount. I had the US 25 with a Honda 7.5 hp 4 stroke engine which weighed 75 pounds. The mount handled that with no problem. How much does your engine weigh?

I can't identify your bracket, but I know in the past many outboard brackets were listed as not for use on 4 cycle engines. I'm guessing it has to do with torque and vibration.

It's all about engine weight. A 4 stroke 9.9HP with electric start will usually weigh close to 100 lbs. That mount installation was probably designed for an engine weight of around 60 lbs with a safety factor of perhaps of up to 120 lbs. (this heavy engines were not around when boats were put together back in the 80's) Sailboattracer indicates he hung a 75 lbs Honda with no problems; that was only 15 lbs. over and probably within the built in safety factor. With a 100 lbs. engine you would be looking at 40 lbs. over and not much of a safety net. Add to that the age of the mount and wear and tear and it might be a good idea to get a new motor mount rated for 100+ lbs and properly installed in the transom with adequate backing plates. It is not only the mount but the transom and backing plate that need to work together to accept the larger load. Do a simple test, attach a 40 lbs weight to the current engine and see how the springs and transom flex. Do a little tugging, pulling and pushing and see how everything feels. If the springs bottom out and the transom flex seems excessive then it would be time for a new motor mount and proper install.

I have the Yamaha T9.9 25" shaft with E Start and Power Tilt. It's 115 Lbs. Nice OB but heavy.
I see the Garelick mounts have tilt adjustment for sloped transoms so the mounting plate can be set to vertical. Then with your power tilt you just tilt it down until level.
The Yamaha 6hp 4 stroke short shaft is listed as weighing 59 lbs so your looking at roughly 45 to 55 lbs additional weight. I think I would op for a new bracket and ensuring the transom has a good backing plate.

Any recommendations for new motor mounts that would adjust to an angled transom?
