My wife and I are looking at sailboats to buy as a 1st sailboat purchase. I have heard mixed reviews about 1980's vintage Pearson boats. How does the quality of early to mid 80's Pearson 208s 303s compare with a boat like a Cal 28 of similar vintage?

I think...

they made the 28' from 1975 to 1982. I would opt for the very last years in production. Pearson is a good boat. Not familar with the Cal's.

Pearson and Cal

John, I had a 1965 Cal, 1977 Cal, a 1977 Pearson and now a 1987 Pearson. I think they are equal. Each one has its good and bad points, but quality and strength are equal. Both are coastal sailors. We have sailed our Pearson 36 for over fifteen years now and have sailed from Texas/Mexico border to Maine without any problems, failures or breakdowns. The 28 was built from about 1975 untill 1982 if I remember correctly. It was then replaced by the 28-2 in 1985 or 6. I don't think there was a 208 or 280. There are three digit Pearsons starting with 303, etc., but not a 28. You can get a lot of Pearson data at: www.pearsoninfo.net Hope you find this helpful. Dave s/v ARIEL

Pearson vs Cal

Ive owned 2 pearsons both were great boats. Cal`s were also good boats You could go for either or. Condition is of utmost importance. These are old boats. be sure and get a survey before you make a descision. Bob Fox Whitecap 1975 P26W #76
