1980 Oday 19 Rigging info and Fiberglass Repairs

Hello everyone. Glad I found this site as I am sure I am going to have many questions on the quest to save this 80 Oday 19. I am a Navy Vet but this is my first sail boat.

Funny story we got her home around 4:45pm last night and went out to eat then stopped to drop my parents mail off to them and told them what we had been up to all day. They said "was that you about 4:30 we saw a sailboat on a trailer on a trailer backwards on highway 19". Yep that was me. hehe

Is there a site that has the rigging diagrams or any other info? I found the original brocure on here but it is too small to read. Anyone have it in real size PDF or know where to find it?

I have to repair the whole right side from dock damage as someone thought pvcpipe and a little fiberglass mat would solve the problem. There is also a very bad patch on the stern I am going to grind out and redo correctly.

My goal is to get it water tight and motoring so we can enjoy it while I fix it up.

Any info or links on these boats is greatly appriciated.

Hello Lee,

Maybe the tow vehicle is at the wrong end of the trailer! :D Looks like a job for Bar Keepers' Friend cleanser. It won't scratch the gel coat and rinses off easily.

RE: Oday info......try drmarine, Iheartodays, or sailboatdata. Of course, add dotcom to each of those suggestions. By looking around those sites you can get info on many models.

Enjoy your new boat. Phil

Thanks for the info I will check them all out. And try the bar keepers friend on the sides.

It took most of the day today scrubbing but the topside, interior and bilge are clean. I used Bleach then Awesome Orange.

Someone has painted part of the topside basically just the cabin to the bow. The rest came out looking real good. I have my work cut out for me on the fiberglass repairs hopefully my Corvette repair days will come back in my head. I need to glue the topside back to the hull in several places then rebuild about 4' of the right side rub rail (after removing all the pvc pipe repair from someone else).

There are some cracks in the keel pocket inside the cabin. Do you think this is from him putting it on the trailer with rollers directly under the keel? Looks like the keel hit the top.

Is there some give with the sail size? I found some local for $50 but I can't find his ad now.

From what I have read they are supposed to be like 24' x 9'

Lee,
That's an Awesome little boat. I think that it's going to clean up well and I'm sure that you're going to have a blast sailing it.
The O'Day sailboats have strong thick hulls and they can be trailered on roller trailers. I mention this because you may want to trailer this boat and a roller trailer will aid in getting her off and on at the ramp a lot better than a bunk trailer but each one should work well for this boat.
A word of caution when using household or hull cleaners. Check the chemical composition of the cleaner to make sure that it does not contain any acid that can eat out the caulking under the gunwales or hardware. Most cleansers contain Oxalic Acid.
Years ago I cleaned the deck of my boat with Zud Cleanser and it did a remarkable job. It didn't harm the Fiberglas but what it did do was cause my cabin to leak. The stuff had eaten all the caulking under the gunwales and I had leaks up the ying yang coming into my cabin. For the outside of the hull I've use Mr. Clean Magic Erasers and they seem to get the impregnated dirt right out of the Gelcoat but I'm not sure if this product contains the type of acids that can eat out caulking.

There are a couple of guys on this forum who own similar boats to yours and I suspect that they will chime in pretty soon and supply you with the info needed.
I think that you're going to have a blast doing the modifications desired to personalize your boat. Click on this link and check out my Albums.

Feel free to use any ideas you find useful.
Good luck!

Hello xc,I too have a 19.You mention repairing the deck to hull.Well,I had the same repair to make on mine last spring.I used 3M 5200 and it is holding flawlessly.I took a cake decorating spatula and applied 80 grit sticky sandpaper.I used this to clean out the joint as well as I could then I worked in the 5200 while prying open the deck to hull joint,Finally I clamped it up and let it cure for most of a week.I have a photo of the clamping in my profile album.Good luck and congrats as that is a wonderful little boat! Thank you for the info I hope to get to West Marine today to check out some products. Gluing the deck back down is first on the list after I cut out all the crappy repair work. I took some photos I last night I will post them in the alblum for everyone to get a good laugh at these repairs (NOTE I DID NOT DO THIS) lol

Do you have any details on your mast carrier? I love it and would like to copy it if you do not mind. What did you do on the bow for when she is in the water?

I built a CNC router last summer so I hope to find some cool projects for the boat I can make on it.

There definitly needs to be a longer run in the cabin for the fishing poles so I am going to cut some new wood for inside to allow them along the side.

Thanks again for the info,
Lee

Man CT must not be as bad as leaving them out in Florida.
Yours look brand new compaired to mine. I think I spent about 8 hours scrubbing and sucking water to get it white again just the topside and cabin.

In the future, you should stay away from bleach, as I understand (from a fiberglass mfg's rep) that bleach dries out the gelcoat. You're safe with oxalic acid based cleaners such as On and Off, but I would be careful as Trinkka says regarding deck fitting bedding. On the plus side, you can review Mainesails instructions for rebedding deck hardware and for getting a professional polish right on this site: http://forums.oday.sailboatowners.com/forumdisplay.php?f=135 If your hull to deck joint is shot, than it's a good bet the rest of your deck fittings are gone too, and if they are still sealed, they aren't too far behind... Plus, you're doing a restoration, might as well take care of the deck fittings properly while you're at it...

Depending on where you're sailing and the wind/current you'll push against, I'd say you're fine with a 2.5hp to 5hp motor. A 2.5hp would probably get you in and out of a marina fine and handle being becalmed, bumping up to the 5hp will surely handle a bit of a blow ok.

Lots of Torqeedo motors popping up, and you can connect them to your 12v house battery for additional range: http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/precision/index.cgi/read/110958

Or you could get a Lehr propane motor, except their little 2.5hp doesn't come long shaft yet. But the 5hp should do you fine. I love the idea of the Lehr. I have a Magma grill for my boat, and I was going to get a butane buffet stove. But then I heard about the Forespar Mini Galley, and the fact that it uses the same propane tanks won me over. Being able to run the motor off the same thing makes it all add up - I wouldn't then need to get both propane and butane tanks... Kinda like when all of your battery operated things use AA batteries...

I think that long shaft motors generally work better on sailboats, even with adjustable mounts like what you have. If you get out in waves, the further down you put that prop, the less chance it'll come up and ventilate...

My 19 came fitted with an Evinrude 4.5.long shaft It's probably vintage '81 original to the boat and has power to spare but I inherited an old minn kota trolling motor that I'm going to try this spring.Definately won't have the power of the 2 stroke but just a flick of the switch and very easy to raise and lower...My boat is on a dock and I only need a motor for maneuvering in and out.

As for the mast cady,I built it from scratch using scrap plywood, ash and cedar I had lying around.I ordered some rudder pintles from https://www.dwyermast.com/items.asp?cat1ID=40&cat1Name=Hardware&familyID=24&familyName=Rudder+Fittings. They have reasonable pricing.

If needed I could send you some more pics of my setup.Let me know...Barry

Lee,I hear you on the scrubbing part.My boat sat outside, unused for twenty years before I came across it.It was a grimy, moldy mess.Amazing what some elbow grease will do for fiberglass.I followed the scrubbing with minor buffing which helped bring up the shine and color.I may do some more this spring.Keep at it and I'm sure you will be pleased with your results.Barry

Progress

Well today was eventful for 2 hours at least. Spent about 2 hours at West Marine collecting stuff for the repairs. Figured my wife would be done at Big Lots but she was another hour lol

Spent 2 hours on the boat today after that and got all the crappy work yanked off. Glad they did a crappy job and did not grind or sand anything. The stern was tigerhair over all the growth on the bottom so it came off easy.

The cheezy job with PVC the resin was not even cured so I was able to seperate most of it off with a sturdy MAC gasket scraper.

I have added more photos of progress to my photos.

I think the best way to tackle the gash is to make a mold of the rail off the front of the boat.
I am thinking some spray foam after taping up the area with a MDF or cardboard mock up box to hold it in. At least I can get the general shape that way.

Thankfully more of the topside is there than I originally thought.

I have copies of the original rigging diagram. I'll attach below. You could also call Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine (508) 644-3001, he has the actual 2-sided instruction sheet. D&R Marine is a little Pop & Mom shop run by Rudy and his Wife, Debbie, Rudy was the Parts Dept. Manager at O'DAY and now runs his little shop making and selling spare parts for O'DAYs. Worth a call! Also, check out his web site www.drmarine.com however, a phone call is faster than an e-mail and more informative.

I'm in the process of creating a usable WORD version of the O'DAY 19 Manual, I think I've got the text done, but the 11" x 17" Rigging Diagram page is still not copying satisfactorily (I might be able to get one of those copies of the original from Rudy next time I visit.).

Just had a look at that photo album showing the "repairs." I gotta say, you're a better man than I am... I sure wouldn't want to tackle that fiberglass job!

Will be a challenge for sure but I am sure I can do much better than the PVC pipe job last person did. lol

I managed to get it off the trailer today but when I tried to get it up the driveway (loose fill I put in) I found out my 4x4 is not engaging so I ended up messing with those stupid micro fuses you need tweezers to handle. Would like to smack that idiot inventor on the back of the head. Then the enginerds put the fuse box is a place you need a monkey sized head to see the fuses.

I think common sense is totally gone in the world. We have to train kindergartens to change fuses for us.

Well my first attempt at a foam mold failed as the inner core did not dry. I am trying again today. My thought on this is I should be able to bend the foam to contor to the area that needs replaced. My goal is to just get the basic shap and build from there.

I will keep updating and posting photos when I get good results.

The drying out is also taking longer I think all the foam core finally drained out as there was another 2" of water in the cockpit yesterday.

Been crazy working 4-midnight so I have been too tired to work on the boat during the day. The foam idea worked to some extent as I will use them for sanding blocks. I decided the right and left sides seemed close enough to make a mold from the good left side to replace the damage on the right. I just uploaed 2 more photos of the mold. The aluminum tape worked great with a little wax to ensure nothing stuck to the deck. I put packing tape down first so I can get the aluminum tape off easier.

I have to get to the store to get more resin as one can I bought last year was bad (hardened even though it was not opened) but I was able to cut the can open and get some out. Go figure the can that was about 6 years old was good.

I ordered the info from him he shipped it very fast. Hopefully it will help me figure out what is missing. I inspected all the cables and ends and only found one cable that is frayed that willl need replaced. I plan on using it to motor the river a little before setting sail. I just missed a sweet deal on a 4 stroke in Tampa. I'm sure another one will turn up sooner or later.

I sell replica Cobra parts to support my hobbies and it has been pretty dead so my account has to catch up with my wants. lol
