I am helping a friend who has purchased a 78 29.9 catalina. He knows nothing about baoting and lives on his baot in the harbor. I have found the problem for the water comming into the bilege and that is a rusted through exhaust pipe/pieces. The reason I cant be to descriptive here is that I am having a hard time figuring out the exhaust system. The engine is a Westerbeke M4-30. I have found the exhaust flange and fromn there it looks like the PO had used all plumbing fixtures from home depot till we get to the water muffler. It would be a great help if somebody could fill me in on a possible layout from the exhaust flange to the water muffler. From the exploded view in the parts manual it shows a exhaust flange with a female fitting comming off the engine. My experience has been that the exhaust elbow or flange has a male fitting and from ther you attach the exhaust hose. Anybody have an idea what fits into the female fitting on the exhaust flange. Any feedback is apprecated or any links to Westerbeke would be helpful. Thanks JOhn Conway

Catalina didn't make a "29.9", nor to my knowledge ever use Westerbeke motors. In '78 you had a Cat22, (no inboard) Cat27 (some built as IB, some OB) and Cat30 (Atomic 4, Universal 11HP, and maybe a Yanmar 12HP-not sure what years they used these.)

Thanks Peter for your reply. I am passing on information from a friend who just purchased the boat and he was told it was a 29.9. I am sure it is a 30 ft boat and it had a Atomic 4 at time of production.

John, I think you are correct in assuming the boat came with an Atomic 4 when made. The engine is probably a replacement. I've seen both male and female exhaust flanges on the back of diesels. Universal uses a female flange that the exhaust riser screws into. Westerbeke usually uses a male flange that the exhaust hose slips onto. Here is a link you might find helpful:
