Another new boat owner. With questions. My wife and I decided to quit buying gas for the gas sucking power boat and go with the flow. So we sold it with the old camper and bought the O'day. Ah camping and sailing.

I have a few new items bought for the last boat I want to install, I have a GPS/depth finder that I would like to mount on the deck to the right of the companion way. I'm not sure if that would get in the way of anything. Second what is the best location to mount transducer to shoot thru hull?

I'm mounting a VHF and a AM/FM radio and not sure of the best way to run antenna wire from outside into cabin. I have a 8' fiberglass antenna and would like to mount it to the mast with a Windex also if possible. How well does the signal splitter VHF- AM/FM to antenna work? Or I'm I better off going with two antennas?

I also have new bilge pump that I want to install, whats the best location for this? Stern? Or in the sump above the keel?

I need a outboard for it also any recommendations as to the size/HP, whats to small whats to large?

I have one more question about the mast mounting to the hinged plate, but I will need to take a few pictures to explain.

Depends on where you are. I'm on an inland lake and use a 4hp long shaft, but if I had current and waves to contend with I'd have more hp and a 25 inch shaft. I like mine because it's light enough that my wife doesn't have to leave it dragging in the water when she sails with her girlfriends.

I've hear that forward is better than aft, the key is to find a spot that has the lowest turbulence - so not near the stern. If you use toilet wax to mount you can play around with it for the best spot - then if you want make a more permanent mount.

I drilled a hole near the mast and used one of those water-tight thru-deck cable mounts. If you can drill in the center of the mast mount you wont have any exposed wires on deck.

I'm not sure but I was going to mount mine just inside the companionway - where the existing bilge hole exists. never went through with it however.

I',m just about to purchase a Tohatsu 6hp sail master for mine - I believe it to be the perfect balance between weight/power and features for this size boat.

Just wanted to share the pics below of former O'Day 23 owner Dave's companionway board mod. Can be flipped inside for use of the instrument when below. Really great idea for a boat with a wide companionway.
I like to lean against the back of the house and stretch my legs out on the cockpit bench so I don't mount anything there.

I would mount a Shakespeare Stubby antenna on the side of the mast up top and mount a 12 extension bracket pointing aft for a 10" Davis windex.

Install a thru-hull coaxial fitting in the cabin top next to your mast tabernacle for the antenna coax. Buy the screw on cap for it when you buy the fitting.

For your GPS, you can make up a swing out bracket from wood with a break away hinge and mount it just inside the companionway on either side.

That is a great idea for your round instruments. Is the box home built? Did you use a standard hinge? I may try that on my boat.

Hi Ward,

Those two pics showing the box are of Wayne's Seaward 22. I'm not sure about the hinges he used but he made the box out of HDPE or StarBoard. Another material that can be used is PVC Trim board.

Here's a swing out bracket that I built out of Teak for my boat quite a while back and the hinge is set up in two pieces so that you can remove the bracket. It locks in place with a turn button. I used Velcro to keep it from swinging back when the bull horns is pointing aft. This gadget comes in handy when I want to hear my VHF from out in the cockpit.

This was my first thought on mounting, but my companion way isn't that wide. I'm thinking about make a swing mount or picking up one of these.

In close quarters I use them together; it's nice to be able to spin without having any momentum. Once I'm out of the marina I just use the rudder, but I don't tighten the nut very much, just enough that it keeps the motor in the position I leave it in.

15 sounds like a lot of hp and don't forget to make sure your mount can handle the weight and thrust of whatever you put on there, which was another reason I went as small as possible, what with a 30 year old mount meant for a two stroke.

I think your boat can take a 9.9 hp and from what I'm told and the 15 HP is just a 9.9 with a larger carborator. Both engines are alike and weigh about the same.
Just make sure that your transom and bracket are heavy duty enough to take weight and thrust of this engine. Myself I prefer a two stroke Johnson 8 HP long staft with the pull start and charging system on my 222.

I have a 9.9 on my 25' O'day and it has plenty of power. I think the 15 will be overkill.
I use the OB tiller for close quarter turning, docking etc. On open water I keep the OB straight and steer with the boat tiller.

I powered my old 222 with a Tohatsu 6 hp. It was only 50 lbs and moved the boat well. I did quite a few projects on that boat and showed some of them in my gallery:

Have fun with the 22. It's a nice boat and I had lot's of fun with mine over the years before I upgraded to a 25.

I use a 55lb thrust troller motor on my Oday 222 on inland lakes with wind. Lightweight, great thrust response and top out at about 3.5knots. While not ideal for speed it makes up for tight quarter maneuverability near shore and dock. Plus it is quiet and instant thrust.

I like it the trade offs of the electric compared to the 5 up Briggs it came with.

I installed one 12 volt and one USB power charging sockets . I mounted my VHF and a GPS/Chartplotter with a ram mount. The ram mount swings around to face the cockpit. I replaced the bulbs in the cabin lights with red LED's. I like to fish at night and I am thinking it will help with my night vision. I bought two sets of lights. Each set of lights came with two lights with two LED's and a wireless switch. I installed one LED light over head and under the port holes facing down lighting the the two seats/bed in the cabin and one in the V berth area. They really light up the cabin. So I mounted one switch inside the companionway and the other in the V berth, so I can enter turn on lights and turn off lights off from the V berth or the reverse. Each LED light has a three position switch on off and RF. They work on AA batteries. Bought some Wax Cleaner and found with a little rubbing the chalky gel coat cleaned up real nice (much more to on that). Pictures explain themselves. Last picture is a used stern rail I installed, also have a swim ladder to mount.

Hi Dave, I bought an Oday 22 last spring & installed a depth finder on the bulkhead in the cockpit. My first attempt at installing the shoot through the hull transducer was in the stern section of the hull about six inches aft of the companionway on the port side just below the hatch door for the gas tank etc. unfortunately it got knocked off in rough weather & so had to relocate on other side. you don't want any turbulence caused from the keel. It worked great in that location because it's the flattest & thinnest part of the hull. You just have to sand the spot down real smooth as any air under the epoxy will render it useless. Try putting Vaseline in the spot you choose first as an adhesive to test it out.
I have an 8hp Johnson which works fine for me.
I installed my bilge pump in the stern area as that seems to be where water settles mostly. The area under the cabin is always dry although seems to be the lowest part of the hull. The challenge I had was to get a 3/4 inch hose under there without risking cutting a hole through the hull. Unless you have leaks through the deck or some catastrophic damage to the hull you shouldn't need to use the pump. If water starts filling up the boat you just need to get it out & head for shore!
