Hi All,

Can someone please tell me the physical overall dimensions of a holding tank for a 1974 Catalina 27. This boat has the table on the starboard side and the settee on the port side. The original holding tank leaked so the PO had it removed. They were given another one to replace it but it wouldn't fit. I'm not sure I want to go with a collapseable type?
I'd really appreciate any information and possibly installation pictures that you may have.

Thanks All!

On my boat we have a small holding tank located on a shelf that was built to hold it under the forward dinette seat. I think it is only 5 gallons as it fills up fast. If I were putting a new one in I would go for the biggest on you could fit through the hole. Keeping in mind you will still need to access the thru hulls, run the hoses and mount the pump.

Writing this and thinking about it I may be maxed out for the space due to thru hulls and I don't think I would put the tank in the aft dinette as that would be a lot of poo filled hose in the future.

Thanks Gary,

Do you think that is the original designed location for the tank? Is your layout with the dinnette on the starboard side and a settee on the port?
I'm trying to establish where the original equipment was and try to replace the original sized tank. Are the thru hulls right there?
Thanks again for your information.
Cheers,

Ron

My set up is fairly new as the PO told me he had just put it in and had only used it a few times. I think the old setup was direct discharge.

On my boat the dinette is to Starboard and the settee to port. Under the hatch in the forward bench of the dinette the tank shelf is about 10 inches off the bottom (inboard) with the pump on top of the tank. The shelf is set up to allow access to the thru hulls and valves (outboard). The pump switch is also in there on the aft bulkhead. The setup also has a port and hose to pump out at a pump station.

To pump ours out at sea we just open the hatch, reach. Down and open the out valve on the thru hull and then hit the macerator pump on switch. It Emory's in about 20 seconds. Turn off the pump and close the valve and your done.

I will try to get pictures next time we make it to the boat.

you have the aft galley, dinette interior......all three interiors produced for this boat.... aft galley dinette, forward galley dinette, and traditional have the same head compartment. On the dinette models the holding tank and through hulls are in a compartment under the forward dinette seat, adjacent to the head, separted by the main bulkhead... There are probably holes for plumbing in the lower glassed part of the bulkhead. There will be a hatch under the cushion to access the holding tank, y-valve, and through hull valves.

A 5 or 6 gallon rectangular plastic tank will fit in the compartment..you may have to construct a simple plywood cradle to accommodate the tank. On my boat there are two plywood pieces cut with small insets for the tank, then shaped on the hull side to allow them to be wedged into place.... The tank sits as high and as far back as possible in the compartment. This gives plenty of room for the plumbing.... and access to the through hull valves.

I may have a few pictures..... I'll try to find them and send them to you via a private message.

If you look at the old parts catalogue shown on the owner's website you'll see a 21 gallons msd system KIT that was offered by Catalina Yachts.... This configuration shows the holding tank located under the vee berth.... mine is nowhere like that.... the system shows the head discharging directly to the tank.... the discharge side of the tank shows a tee fitting with hose going to deck pumpout fitting, or macerator pump to through hull for direct out. The glaring problem is the use of "GATE" valves..... Not Good...... only bronze or resin ball valve should be used. ........ anyhow.... I suggest you call CatalinaYachts customer service and see what they have available....they can probably recommend a better system.

Thank you all for the information! I need to digest and will most likely order a new one... I appreciated the link to Catalina Direct, didn't know it existed.

Cheers All,
